All For Now

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Dear readers,

After more than three years of sharing our favorite—mostly local—treasures with you, it’s time for YHO to take an indefinite break. Work has never been so much fun, and yet, we find ourselves too geographically and financially challenged to keep this project moving forward for the time being. If you would like to stay updated, be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

In the meantime, if you’re in need of a lifestyle writer or editor, don’t hesitate to e-mail ali (at) yourheartout.com. (She writes most of the stuff around here, unless otherwise noted. And she’s used to writing about herself in the third person, in case you were wondering.)

Please, continue to keep up with all of the gang by visiting our sites and blogs.

We remain your faithful Utahphiles. We’re really gonna miss you.

holiday-ornaments

At last, it’s so close we can almost taste it. We hope that your gift shopping is wrapped up, and that soon enough, the children will be nestled all snug in their beds or indulge in a long winter nap … so you can do the same. We’re wishing you glad tidings of great joy this weekend.

Here are some seasonal delights, if you still need help feeling the holiday spirit. Or simply misplaced your gift tags or can’t summon up the creativity for another girlfriend gift.

Meet Stephanie

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

stephanie-polaShe hails from the Midwest and New England and lives in Utah, but don’t be surprised if you find Stephanie Brubaker shacking up in France or tip-toeing into Italy. Our favorite Francophile doubles as a Chalet-owner in the French countryside but in this neck of the woods, you’re likely to run into her at the market where she’ll recommend a good gruyere for your grilled cheese, or thumbing through Sevens at the Rack. (Go with the high-waisted boot cut, she’d say.)

What we love most about this Odyssey-drivin’ hot mama is her good sets of eyes … and ears. She knows it all, and around here, she shares her favorite local finds—be it Tulie Bakery or TV personality. Get more tips from Stephanie at her blog, www.stephmodo.com. You can follow her posts here.

Meet Lisa Van Orman Hadley

Monday, October 12th, 2009

lisa-polaMore introducing of the YHO crew….

If you asked Lisa Van Orman Hadley for a ride home, you might have to settle for a seat on the handlebars of her totally awesome yellow and turquoise Raleigh roadbike. This girl about town was living the green life before it became cool and is true blue about her friendship with our pal, Mother Earth.

Lisa also has a love for words—collecting quotes, books and her own thoughts. And sometimes they come out in Portuguese. She’d rather be in Brazil, but for now, if you’re looking for a commuting buddy, keep an eye out for Lisa. She brakes for chocolate ganache and grilled abacaxi, if you fala.

See posts on how to green-ify your life with Lisa Van Orman Hadley here.

It’s time to light it up, ladies. Light what, you say? That beautiful creature lying within your weary bones—the one that’s often caged up and bogged down with spreadsheet-making, e-mail-typing, diaper-changing and other various forms of updating the TPS Report. No doubt she’s one cranky animal.

Time to set her free. How’s about a two-day event centered on your creative well-being? At Spark the Event, taking place in Salt Lake City on November 6 and 7, you can mix and mingle with artistic types, as well as unleash your own. You’ll take photography courses, mixed-media journal & book classes, and you’ll learn about fabric/sewing as well as whip up your own jewelry.

Tickets for the two-day fun extravaganza include classes and supplies, speakers, food, snacks, plus a goodie bag. And that’s something worth buying into. Get the lowdown here.

“What’s beautiful about the Beehive State are the people, and it’s what draws me to photograph. The people you encounter here are rich with stories, history and character.”

3. By Adam Moore

“The state motto is simple: industry. This photograph depicts three generations of one family, working on the family farm in Payson, Utah. Each of the three is in a different field. Each understands the meaning of self-reliance and family in his own way. These two things connect us all.”

“Good fruit: hard-working people with good values producing the best of the best. That’s Utah.”

5. By Christine Hunsaker

“I bike past this building on the way to work. In 1912 it burned down the same day the Titanic sunk, and the local paper was supposedly the only one in the entire country that didn’t front page the calamity, choosing the local fire instead. The current sign is something of an icon, locally.”
