Still looking for that one shop? You know, the one you love so much that at the thought of it, you find your lips painted cherry red and hair covered with your grandmother’s beaded pillbox hat. Some places just have that kind of dress-up and step-into-a-new-self appeal. (Even if that new self oddly mimics your grandmother at your age.)

Meet newbie Lucille Elaine. As its name suggests, this soon-to-be boutique taking residence in Fashion Place Mall is started up by the same stylish crew that brought us Kaleidoscope, and aims to impart a bit of ladylike class, 1950′s etiquette and style on its 2009 counterparts with the help from the likes of Roost, Tulu, Odd Molly and new favorite line Suzabelle.

But first, this shop needs a boost in the shopgirl area. Want to hang out in this friendly atmosphere for 20-or-so hours each week? You might be tempted to pull out your typewriter, but all you have to do is send an e-mail touting why you’re the best candidate for the fun and fashionable position to megbingham (at) hotmail.com.

It’s never too late to change your name. Or at least the name of your employer. Here’s to a new, old self.

Thought “Savannah Smiles” and “SLC Punk” were the only flicks putting our backyard on the silver screen? As much as we love that brown-eyed girl and Salt Lake’s punk rock underbelly, it’s time we introduce the latest indie comedy film to come from Utah stock.

“White on Rice” has already debuted in L.A. and San Francisco, and now makes its way to our neck of the woods. Directed and co-directed by Utahns David and Megan Boyle, and starring Hiroshi Watanabe (“Letters from Iwo Jima”) and James Kyson Lee (“Heroes”), this comedy-that-could has been touted as “an Asian American film that keeps its identity in its heart rather than on its sleeve,” by The San Francisco Chronicle.

See it. Not only to show support for your peeps, because we know you like to laugh. Get started here or here. “White on Rice” is playing at Cinemark 16 at Provo Towne Center and Century 16 on 3300 South in Salt Lake City this Friday through October 1, with Q&A screenings this weekend only.

So, as they say, get on it.

You’ve got that old dresser all dolled up with no place to go. Same goes for the yard sale chair you overhauled and the antique bassinet you completely made over. You’re the makeover queen. You love to revamp. It’s the re-use part you’re having a hard time with. Ever think of turning this little habit of yours into a little business?

Provo’s Kaleidoscope Boutique is turning things up a notch, for all you consigners and consignees. As of right this minute, this cute shop is opening its doors to consigned furnishings—whether it’s a vintage settee or a classically-styled PB mirror trio. Just bring your items by the shop in Provo’s Riverwoods to get the yea or nay.

As for the chic clothing you know and love the shop for, it’ll still be there too. Phew. Along with a brand-new (to us) and well-edited home collection.

Pull your bod out of the winter blues with the help of a brand new day spa that gives fresh meaning to the term “pretty in pink.” Within the walls of this rosy, 120-year-old cottage, you can get a pick-me-up with a customized massage or mini facial. And that’s just the beginning of the pamper list.

Aside from extensive therapeutic treatments, Bungalow 8 provides microdermabrasion, lash tints and more. At a grand opening on April 11, they’ll be carrying made-to-order Bella Lucce beauty products and they also house the Aromatherapy Capsule for ultra-exclusive spa treatments. After rinsing your Mediterranean wine-and-honey mask, you can also shop the cottage for gifts and goodies from local artisans. (Art for consignment now being accepted.)

bungalow-8-2

Starting in June, you’ll be able to harness your chi and find your center at “Gratitude Yoga”—where several intimate classes will be offered by reservation on a weekly basis. Or, if you’re looking for a locale for your next gathering, look into reserving the cabin for your crew.

Stop by on or after April 11 for a massage plus 30-minute aromatherm steam for just $90 or treat mom to a Day of Decadence, which includes an aromatherm steam, one-hour massage, one-hour facial and gift for $160. (Offers expire May 9.)

American Crafts Warehouse Sale

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

By Rachel Jones

american-crafts-ex

Are you a fan of paper products? Gifts tied up with string? Or how about ribbon, cardstock, wrapping paper, markers, albums or various scrapbook supplies?

If these things sound like you, then I’ve got just the sale to make your holiday merry. I don’t even scrapbook, but the American Crafts warehouse sale is the kind that can make a girl giddy. I picked up canvas 8.5 x 11 albums for $5 apiece and 80 (yes, eight-oh) spools of ribbon for $30. You’ll also see Christmas-themed wrapping paper, bags, cards and tags. Check out the website to get a feel for the kind of items I speak of. My only warning? A paper-crazed spender could do a lot of damage to her holiday budget here. Give yourself limit before you set foot in the door or else things could get dangerous fast.

Tip: If you call three people while you’re at the sale and let them in on the news, and then leave your cell phone log at the register, you’ll get $5 off your entire purchase and another $5 to use on your next visit. And sometimes you’ll get an extra gift if you spend over $50.

Sunflower Farmers Markets

Sunflower Farmers Market
Anybody else curious about the new market that opened across the street from Fashion Place Mall? We were too. So we did some investigating and were pleasantly surprised with the results. (Take note, Utah County dwellers. There’s one in Orem, too.)

Reminiscent of Trader Joe’s, Sunflower Market dishes out a variety of their own sauces, boxed and baked foods, chips and drinks. We also spotted a healthy variety of cheeses, an olive bar and store-made pasta salads and fresh salads that looked dee-lish. Smack-dab in the middle of the store is a huge assortment of organic fruits and veggies—all reasonably priced. Best, these beauties looked really fresh.

Sunflower Farmers Market

The vegetarian in me got excited to see the nice variety of vegan/vegetarian options. With Amy’s-brand everything (and so much more) the meat-omitting folks will be in a culinary paradise.

The “Serious Food, Silly Prices” bit rang partially true: Prices were higher than your average grocery store, but we spotted some specials on produce, drinks and cheeses that would be nice on both the budget and your creating of a balanced meal.

Sunflower Farmers Market
When I visited, the store was hosting a health fair and many a happy customer walked away with free samples, complimentary canvas totes and their faces painted. You might not be as lucky as to get a star brushed on your forehead, but you can always visit the website to get your hands on coupons and healthy recipes.

Admit it. You’ve always wanted to design your own party invitations. To erase the unwelcome blemish out of your portrait. To capture your kids in action. In 2008, the skills best tucked in your back pocket (if you want to survive as master blogger, master mom or just everyday functioning person) include graphic design, photo editing and photography itself.

And what better time to learn than with a little summer school? Here’s what you can learn this summer at Nicole’s school in Orem. Note the all-in-one-day classes that make commuting much more attractive. PLUS: Mention yours truly (YHO) and you’ll get $10 off classes beginning July 9 and 10.
