Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Alongside our Mini Cadbury’s and pastel Peeps, here are some items we’d be tickled to find inside an Easter basket. (And it’s not like Mister Bunny worries about shipping, but small shops really know how to hop-to when it comes to speedy delivery.)

Let this ensemble take you from March’s snow to April’s showers. A sturdy-meets-stylish boot keeps your toes out of the snow and shields your stems from sleet. Throw a sharp double-breasted trench over the whole thing, and you’ve got serious class—even if your dress’s print is lumberjack-inspired.

Here’s a silhouette to help you harness your inner Blair Waldorf—minus the Waldorf wallet. Plaid patterning, ruffle details and crisp black topped with a headband scream grown-up prepster chic. If you want to take it down a notch (and stay cozy), try throwing on your boyfriend’s oversize cardigan.

Darlybird

When it comes to holiday stocking-stuffers and gift items for lassies big and small, we’d be happy with anything that flies the Darlybird coop. This one-stop gift shop stands ready to to answer your holiday shopping woes—whether it’s the cranky landlady on your list, or your overly-creative sister that has you racking your brain or ruining your manicure.

Do your nails a favor and cruise by. The shop won our hearts for debuting everyone’s favorite rosy earrings. To stay ahead of the trend this season, try a set of cherry-red vintage cerise earrings or any other Darlybird exclusive like Art Nouveau-eque olive jade drops and guten tag posts made from antique buttons. If you want to wrap up just a little something for your lady friends, pick up a handful of Darlybird’s vintage-inspired bobby-pins at just $4 a pop.

Darlybird

Or, if there’s a baker in the family, peruse the collection of fun cake toppers and displays. She’ll swoon over the baby blue or milk glass green shade of her new petit four cake stand, or entertained by the prospects of twisted taper candles.

To jumpstart her creativity, a Learn to Sew kit should do the job. Or if she already has that arena mastered, challenge her with one of Darlybird’s latest additions—a blank board book stands ready for her original spin. Still stumped? Keep it simple with any number of vintage ribbons.

There are also sundries for kiddos, party-planning ideas and decorations, paper products for staying-in-touch and that’s just the beginning. Oh, and there’s a dude on your list? Well, then let him try these cufflinks on for size.

For an extra boost, use code “DARLYYHO” to get 15% off your Darlybird purchases through December 3rd. Better act fast!

Shade Clothing

Quick, name the number one reason why fall is the very best season. Now … let us guess: Is it the apple-picking that gets you hot? The long canyon drives? The crisp smell under your nose?

Nah. Though great alternatives (it ain’t easy to turn down a freshly-plucked apple), each falls short of the season’s very best attribute: layering weather. Who doesn’t love comfy and cozy clothes that are designed to keep you covered and looking smart?

Shade Clothing

Shade Clothing knows what’s up for Fall 2008. Check out their new line (online and in stores now), stacked with classic sweater pieces you’ll want to bundle yourself in this fall and next. From intentionally oversize to streamlined and structured, Shade’s latest designs come in flattering cotton blends (yum) and ultrasoft fleece (double yum). And naturally, there’s a hefty portion of basics just waiting to be added to.

We’re ready to wrap ourselves in the goes-with-anything Robe Wrap (check out the stylish cut of the sleeves), and the equally diverse Varsity Cardigan seems to by calling our names. At that price, we’ll take two. While you’re at it, have a look at Shade’s interestingly-shaped Paris Top (also interestingly-named), and the nice, poppy palette of the Sweatshirt With Gathers.

Shade Clothing

As if things weren’t looking bright enough, Shade rolls out a brand-new lounge collection—just when we though we couldn’t be more comfy. You’ll love the Zip Hoodie‘s lined hood and feminine details, and the Lounge Pant‘s generous and flattering waistline which put sweats to shame. Errand-running never looked (or felt) so good.

Say goodbye to summer and hello to Shade this September. And then start apple-picking, canyon-driving and crisp-air smelling in your favorite Shade sweater. And yes, a hoodie-and-pant combo is A-OK too.

One of the looks we love most for fall is the layered one. This season, don’t be afraid to throw a nice fitted tee ‘neath that streamlined strapless number you’ve been achin’ to buy. (We’re not kiddin’.) The look is fresh and modern and—maybe best of all—comfortable. Add necklaces for extra fun, though the waterfall effect on this LBD might be calling for bracelets instead.

We’re holding on to the last bits of summer but stepping into autumn with this ensemble. Anthropologie’s crisp white top oozes with summer’s fresh appeal but is classic enough to make it through the next season (if not the next few years … plus, it’s ripe for pairing with a cardi). Slender grays are still cool for fall in ’08, and we like the idea of offsetting their washed-out quality with slick flats and a sleek, hinged bangle. Maybe you will like it too. Old Navy has pulled out some great shoes for fall, and in fun colors like Monaco Plum (pictured) and Pepperoncini.

Pulling out your inner prepster never hurt anyone, especially with fall just around the corner. (Eek!) But here’s to looking forward to jeans and jacket weather. You’ll get extra points for tying the sweater around your shoulders, or slinging on a set of pearls. But, really, a pair of black keds with white laces would dress the look down adequately … and fashionably, especially if the sweater’s left unbuttoned to hang lazily at your waist.

This one’s a little bit country, but still sweet and sexy. If you want to make it a little more rock and roll, trade out your brown leather for black. Maybe even black skinnies, if you’ve got them on-hand.

Chill Seekers

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

It’s July and it’s hot hot hot. What better to wear than the problem-solving, outfit-all-in-one summer dress? Here are a few of our picks, covering enough to beat the UV rays but seamless enough to withstand the temps, too. Just grab your sandals and some SPF and you’re good to go.

One Outfit, One Hundred Dollars (Or Two): Reunion Edition

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Blast. We’re over budget. Usually we pride ourselves on our genteel thriftiness but there are occasions when throwing down a little more cash will definitely pay off. Occasions like your high school reunion, for example, where you’ll need to be pulling off all that if-they-could-see-me-now business without any (obvious) effort.

For a nice sit-down dinner on a summer evening, we recommend something along these lines: The ’70s-inspired print on this silk twill dress yields your 17-year-old retro wardrobe but shows you’ve put some sophistication in your back pocket since ’98. The thick heel on a metallic summer shoe means you still know how to have fun … and shake it on the dance floor even if you’re all grown up.

And if you’re cold or need to cover up, we found a little sweater that should do the job. Add some clanky bangles, and you’re good to go. As long as you have a hot date. Or better, a hot BFF or two.

p.s. With the dress at an additional 25% off and a set of budget bracelets, this entire ensemble weighs in at less than $200. And we think you’ll wear them all again (without any sneers or sly remarks from your school’s Patty Simcocks).

Ah-ha! One of our favorite spring tops finally went on sale, and in our favorite color too. (Keep yer eyes peeled; those prices sometimes drop even more.)

We like the idea of stepping into summer in this chic-meets-casual ensemble: pair the eye-catching, billowy blouse with cropped black denim and snakeskin flats, and then polish it off with an unexpected retro-yielding bangle.

Baby Bintz

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008
bab bintz

When it comes to cute stuff for babies, we can’t get enough around here. Whether or not you’re a Mom, certainly you have a sister, brother, cousin, BFF, coworker, neighbor, book clubber with a wee one on the way, if not already wrapped in their arms that you can spoil, err, shower with love.

Our next stop: Baby Bintz. This hub for baby accessories (and YHO sponsor!) keeps plenty of cute tokens on-hand. We’re huge fans of their soft-as-a-baby’s-behind toddler blankets (we like the monkey kind), as well as Baby Bintz’ still-soft and stylish burp cloths (like this). Also check out the crayon and coloring kits for kiddos.

Also click on the nicely packaged and put-together Bintz Baskets that make gift-giving a snap. You’ll even get to customize what goes inside.

YHO Dealio: Your Heart Out readers will get 15% off their next purchase when they enter coupon code “Heart” at checkout. This offer is good through May only so hurry up up up.

baby bintz

{Mini Doorprize} As if that wasn’t enough, Baby Bintz wants to hand out one burp cloth and one ribbon binkie clip to one oh-so-lucky YHO baby. Want these to dazzle the little one in your life? You’ll even get to pick which designs you want. Just leave one comment on this post before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. We’ll announce the winner on Thursday.

Jacket Weather

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

We’re finally liking the looks of the five-day forecast. Wethinks it’s fair to say that jacket weather has officially arrived—throw a cropped mini-coat over your favorite tee, or let the hem of your trench meet the hem of your knee-length sundress.

Here’s a handful of our current faves. Looks like poppy is the color for spring, but we like that subtle metallic tone too.

Clockwise: Textured Canvas Bomber from Tulle; Jaunty Jacket from Anthropologie; Mossimo Bib A-Line Coat from Target; Double Breasted Blazer from Topshop; Lux Cropped Trench from Urban Outfitters; Lillian Trench from Delia’s, Short Sleeve Trench Jacket from Banana Republic; Metallic Patch Pocket Jacket from Gap; Textured Cotton Coat from Boden; Solid Tulip Jacket from J.Crew

Picnics and Baskets

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

The coast isn’t quite clear (snow again?), but that doesn’t mean we can’t cheer ourselves up with thoughts of spring-to-summer picnics. In the mountains. At the park. In the garden. For the outdoor concert.

picnic basket

These are just a few of our favorites picnic baskets, found online. Some offer the classic weaved boxy basket, while others include carriers that keep your drinks cool and glasses that won’t break. And salt and pepper shakers. They thought of ev-uh-ry-thing.

Pictured (clockwise from top left): Martha Stewart Collection Picnic Basket, Picnic Basket With Liner, Persimmon Picnic Set, Tapered Rattan Picnic Set, Safari Picnic Backpack (also available locally at OC Tanner), Banana Leaf Picnic Basket.

Where are your favorite local picnic spots? Share your ideas below. Then we can compile a list for quick-reference.

ModMum

Nobody likes to have their hands full. Rather, we like to throw them up in the air … and wave them around like we just don’t care. Even though we do care. For our wee babies, in particular.

Enter ModMum baby slings. These sturdy helper-outers are at-once stylish and useful—our favorite combination, next to peanut butter and chocolate. You can have little little Ella or Otto nuzzled up to you while you fill your plate at the shower, or while you fold your laundry, or while you shop for that perfect post-pregnancy top. And you’ll look good while you’re doing it.

ModMum baby slings

ModMum reversible slings come in an assortment of fun patterns and bright colors, which will also make getting dressed a cinch. What will look good with the super-cute Olivia? We know! Your favorite fitted T-shirt. What about the whimsical Carmen? How’s about your favorite plain-colored T-shirt? Of course, they’ll look good with your crisp blouses and pintucked smocks, too. And attention, city gals, ModMum knows that black is the new black. Check out the all-sleek Viv.

{Did someone say Doorprize?} ModMum wants to treat two different YHO readers to a sling of their choice. Merci, ModMum! Have a bundle on the way? Got a wife/cousin/friend/sister’s friend with a bun in the oven? We daresay she’ll want one of these pretties. Leave just one comment on this post by 10 p.m. on Friday, April 18. We’ll announce the winners on Saturday.
