By Lacey Jane Pappas

musicticketnov

Welcome, November. Be thankful these bands are visiting this month:

imogenheapImogen Heap is back supporting her recent release “Ellipse” and will be showcasing her one-man-band skills at in the Venue on the 12th. After riding the wave that was “Let Go” for some time, the British singer/songwriter is right back where she left off. Be sure to catch this impressive solo act live.

Suggested Listen: “First Train Home”

swellseasonWho else fell in love with the movie “Once”—especially the gorgeous soundtrack and stunning Marketa and Glen, now known together as The Swell Season. The good news is this duo is back with their latest full-length album, “Strict Joy.” The sound that made them famous, including catchy hooks and beautiful melodies, is emulated in each track on their new album. The bad news? The show already looks to be sold out. Try your luck at Craigslist.

Suggested Listen: “In These Arms”

blindpilotOne of my favorite new-to-me bands hail from Portland Oregon, called Blind Pilot. This duo set out on a bike tour traveling from Vancouver to San Francisco playing shows and peddling their album, all on bicycle. Luckily, they kept the momentum going by releasing their 2009 album, “3 Rounds & A Sound.” Catch them (and maybe their bikes) on November 29 at Urban Lounge.

yolatengo1Where do you start with a band like Yo La Tengo? Formed in 1984, this rock trio has a stocked anthology. They’re adventurous, eclectic and a band that’s constantly redefining itself. Suggested listen: “Mr. Tambourine Man”

Summer is definitely heating up now that we have a handful of free shows to look forward to with the Twilight Concert Series. The SLC Arts Council did a fantasic job in booking this lineup. Here’s the 411:

The Twilight Concert Series are free shows at the Gallivan Center each Thursday evening, beginning July 9 through August 27. If you’ve been to one of these shows, you already know that it gets extremely crowded. So if you’re a serious fan, plan on getting there early to score a good spot.

boniverOn July 9, Bon Iver and Jenny Lewis will be kicking off the series. Bon Iver is one of the most buzzed-about artists from 2008. With his flawless record “For Emma, Forever Ago” listeners became enchanted with Bon Iver’s gentle voice and stunning songwriting.

jennylewisAs for Ms. Indie Queen herself, Jenny Lewis will be the following act. The Rilo Kiley superstar is still supporting her second solo record, “Acid Tongue.” Lewis’ voice, which has grown in range over the years, has solidified her reputation as a respected singer and songwriter. Listen to Jenny Lewis here. Suggested track: “Acid Tongue”

theblackkeysOn July 16, it’s The Black Keys and Human Highway taking the Gallivan Center stage. Then, on July 23, catch guitar-enthusiast M. Ward and Land of Talk. Even without the company of Zooey, M. Ward shines as a solo artist.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Shed Your Love”

benkwellerAustin rocker Ben Kweller is out supporting his latest folk-rock album, “Changing Horses.” Even with the addition of a pedal steel guitar, the voice that is unmistakably Kweller’s shines on this twangy, loose-feeling album. See Ben get a little bit country at Avalon Theater on June 13.

May Music Guide

By Lacey Jane Pappas

musicticketmay

Welcome to May! Before summer’s crazy schedule begins, take a breather with any of the awesome bands visiting this month.

conchordsIf you haven’t joined the fan group of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie already, it’s time to get onboard with Flight of the Conchords. This New Zealand duo began  playing their funny tunes in 2002 and hit jackpot with an HBO series that started in 2007. It’s the careful songwriting and humorous ballads (and lovable personalities) that keep fans smiling and laughing out loud. Catch both hilarities at Abravanel Hall on May 17. Though, on an unfunny note, it appears the show is sold out. Maybe Cragislist can help?

Listen here. Suggested track: “Think About It”

horsefeathersMellow indie artists Horse Feathers will be playing Kilby Court on Friday, May 22. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, the songster trio plays beautiful, raw, contemporary folk music. If you’re a fan of Band of Horses or Devendra Banart, check out these up-and-comers.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Curse in the Weeds”

nekoThe red-head lady that’s been getting a lot of buzz of late—as rightfully so—is the one and only Ms. Neko Case. Neko’s latest album, “Middle Cyclone,” dropped in March and has many falling for her magical voice. If you missed her free show at the Twilight Concert Series last year, see her instead at Red Butte Gardens at the end of the month. This class act is a flawless performer who leaves you awe-struck.

April Music Guide

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

By Lacey Jane Pappas

musicticketapr

Gearing up for showers and flowers this month? Don’t forget to add live music to the mix. Here are my picks:

headlightsAre you a fan of Stars or Camera Obscura? Chances are you’ll also like the poppy sound of Illinois natives Headlights. They’ll be stopping by Kilby Court on Monday, April 13 to play from their latest album, “Some Racing, Some Stopping.” You’ll enjoy their light-hearted, happy sound—just in time for spring.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Cherry Tulips”

mirahSpeaking of lady songsters, Mirah (or Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn) will be playing Kilby Court on April 14. Catch an earful of beautiful tracks from this Washington gal, who’s playing in support of her album, “(A)spera.”

Listen here. Suggested track: “Cold Cold Water”

clemsnideSee alt crooners Clem Snide on April 13 at Urban Lounge. This east coast group brings a plethora of sounds from indie-rock to folk. My favorite Clem Snide songs are the simple, bare-boned tunes that leave lead singer Eef Barzelay’s vocals to shine. Their latest, “Hungry Bird,” is full of tracks just like this.

Listen here. Suggested track: “With All My Heart”

yannWhen you think of the 2001 film “Amelie,” I’m sure the big-eyed main character pops into your head as well as the stunning soundtrack (not to mention cinematography). With strings, piano and accordion, Yann Tiersen set the perfect tone to accompany Amelie’s fantastical world. If you’re a fan of instrumental, or tunes that will take you to Paris, this show isn’t to be missed. Catch the praised composer at Urban Lounge on April 25.

Listen here. Suggested track: “La Valse d’Amelie”

Hello March! Lots of bands are finally venturing out in support of new records. We hand-picked these favorites for you to feast your ears on this month:

blitzenOregon natives Blitzen Trapper will be playing Kilby Court on March 13. If you’re a Beck fan, chances are you’ll also like this lo-fi indie band. Blitzen Trapper takes on sounds from rock, country and pop, so they’re ready to satisfy any musical taste.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Silver Moon”

efterklangAll the way from Denmark, the experimental group Efterklang will also grace SLC on March 13, so choose wisely. Efterklang is a chorus affair—all band members contribute to the song writing, recording and producing of albums. Fingers crossed they’ll put some of the creativity that goes into the music videos into a live show—that’s what turned me onto this band in the first place. Either way, they’re a worthwhile listen.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Mirador”

bishop-allenAs longtime fans of Bishop Allen, we wouldn’t dare miss their upcoming show. The Harvard grads are supporting their new release, “Grrr….” Their track “Dimmer” is getting lots of air time and falls in tune with what we’ve come to expect from these Ivy Leaguers: music that’s upbeat, clever and catchy. Get into the beat on March 26 at Kilby Court.

Welcome to February! It’s the month of the valentine, so if you want to give your sweetheart the gift of live music, here are my suggestions:

delta-spiritIf you’re aching for new music and have an affinity with bands like Cold War Kids and/or Dr. Dog, definitely tune in to San Diego-based indie rockers Delta Spirit. Their soulful sound is evidenced on their album “Ode to Sunshine”—and who doesn’t love a bout of sun in the winter? Plus, you have two chances to check ‘em out on February 10 (an early show at Kilby Court), or later at Urban Lounge.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Parade”

andrew-birdWhistler, violinist, guitarist, vocalist and glockenspielist(!) Andrew Bird will show off his various talents on-stage at Murray Theater on February 25. Bird is promoting his buzz-worthy release, “Noble Beast,” which is thee record to add to your collection. Each track is filled with catchy and breath-taking rhythms and melodies. You’ll be whistling and clapping along.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Fitz and the Dizzyspells

submarinesIt’s that song from the iPhone commercials that won’t leave your head—the one that features all the cool apps available on the gadget. Time to get to know the band behind the catchy tune. It’s the Submarines, and the song is “You Me and the Bourgeoisie.” And the duo behind the bubblegum pop is John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard. Chances are if you dig the commercial, you’ll enjoy the rest of their songs. And the opening act, the Morning Benders, should make a nice complement.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Brightest Hour”

Last year, she topped the charts with the soulful “Chasing Pavements.” The remainder of her debut album includes a Bob Dylan cover, R&B-style tracks and acoustic folk-like songs. Thanks to her commanding voice, the live versions of her songs will make for an unforgettable evening. But hurry; her shows often sell out.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Chasing Pavements”

devotchkaWere you a fan of 2006’s “Little Miss Sunshine”? Then it’s likely you’re familiar with the next band’s sweeping songs. Devotchka is a Denver-based group with eclectic sounds ranging from indie rock to gypsy-like. To pull it off, Devotchka relies on a wide array of instruments like horns tand strings and even bazoukis, which should make for an engaging show on January 28.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Here’s How the Story Ends”

Favorite Albums of ‘08

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

By Lacey Jane Pappas

On the eve of 2009, I thought I’d share some of my favorite sounds of the last year. Though the year is (almost) up, it’s not too late to give some of these beauties a good spin. Then tell us some of your favorites, too, and preview my all-inclusive playlist here.

acidtongue10. Jenny Lewis: Acid Tongue

This album features great storytelling and what’s perhaps my favorite song of 2008 altogether: the title track, “Acid Tongue.” The melody is catchy and the chorus is beautiful—much like the rest of the collection.

9. Flight of the Conchords: Flight of the Conchords

If you’re a fan of the show, you already know how crucial these clever tunes are to each episode. On their own, the songs are smart both lyrically and musically, and the album has grown into my go-to CD whenever I’m in need of a good laugh. (And for the record, I’m a bigger fan of Jemaine.)

death8. Death Cab For Cutie: Narrow Stairs

As a longtime admirer of Death Cab, I always get excited for their new releases. Admittedly, it took me many listens to warm up to this album, but I soon came to love the always-reliable, sophisticated song-writing.

7. Thao: We Brave Bee Stings and All

This collection came out early in the year and was one I was slow to listen to. Soon, I realized that Thao’s imperfect voice, accompanied by staggered, bluesy rhythms made for a new, refreshing sound.

vampire6. Vampire Weekend: Vampire Weekend

These boys have topped many best-of lists for 2008. For me, it comes down to Vampire Weekend’s refreshing and reinvented pop vibe, reminding us of long-ago influences like Paul Simon and the Beach Boys. It’s a happy album that can be listened to on repeat.

5. Nada Surf: Lucky

Ever since Nada Surf’s release of “Let Go,” I’ve been a sucker for this group’s beautiful melodies. It’s easy for this band to get lost in the indie-rock shuffle, but if you focus on them alone, you’ll soon find a favorite.

pershing4. Someone Loves You Boris Yeltsin: Pershing

This band-with-a-long-name runs a gamut of soundalikes from Weezer to Rogue Wave, but they’re talented enough to stamp it and make it their own. “Pershing” is a good, catchy collection, even if it takes some getting used to.

3. She & Him: Volume One

What a lovely project this turned out to be! (Did we expect any less?) M. Ward and actress/songstress Zooey Deschanel—soon to be Mrs. Ben Gibbard—released this charming album. Influenced by that smooth, 1950s girly-pop music that’s hard not to enjoy, each and every song leaves you with a smile.

mates2. Mates of State: Re-Arrange Us

I fell hard and fast for this album. Not only was it on constant repeat throughout summer, it also joined me at the gym. The fast-paced rhythms and sing-along lyrics stick with you, and leave you tapping your feet.

1. Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago

I’ve got a weakness for beautiful ballads, and this track-list is packed with them. Justin Vernon created a romantic album filled with fragile but genuine songs. If you’re new to the group, debut “Skinny Love.” It’s a good representation of the album as a whole.

Now, you tell me. What were some of your 2008 favorites? And here’s to an even better 2009!

Lacey’s Music Guide: Merry, Merry Music & Mixes

Monday, December 8th, 2008

By Lacey Jane Pappas

It’s time to put a jingle in December. Last year, I provided some classic go-to holiday albums that are still worth caroling to. But since we’ve been good all year long, favorite songsters donned their Santa suits for 2008 and released holiday albums that are sure to help you feel the holiday spirit.

Here are some of my favorites:

winter-songs.jpgRemember the Hotel Cafe Tour songstresses that visited in November? Together, the troupe released “The Hotel Cafe Tour Presents: Winter Songs.” This compilation is packed with 15 tracks of traditional carols interpreted by their set of angelic voices. My favorite tracks are Priscilla Ahn’s “Silent Night,” Catherine Feeny’s “The Christmas Song,” and a beautiful arrangement of “Au Lang Syne” by various songsters. Preview and purchase here.

ill-stay.jpgIf you’re a fan of Au Revoir Simone, Figurine or Blitzen Trapper, you’ll want to check out the compilation album “I’ll Stay ‘Til After Christmas.” The 15-track album showcases traditional songs by indie favorites. My preferred tracks include Papercuts’ “Go Tell It on the Mountain” and Bosque Brown’s “Silent Night.” Preview and purchase here.

a-very-rosie-christmas.jpgI’m a big fan of Rosie Thomas, so when she released a 14-track holiday special called “A Very Rose Christmas,” I was handed a big cup of holiday cheer. Rosie shares her renditions of traditional hymns and puts her own twist on new carols like “Why Can’t It Be Christmastime All Year,” “Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel.” I never tire of this cover: “River.” Preview and purchase here.

don-peris.jpgOr if instrumental music is more your cup of tea, I have just the thing for you. Don Peris of The Innocence Mission brings his stellar guitar skills to the Christmas-themed album “Brighter Visions Beam Afar.” Don relies solely on a guitar to carry traditional Christmas melodies and adds classics like “Fur Elise” and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” to the mix. Every track is worth a listen. Preview and purchase here.

Or, if you need to hear holiday music 24/7 but FM100 isn’t doing it for you, check out Woxy’s Holiday Mixer. They’ve compiled a fantastic group of artists to ring in some cheer. Download and stream here.

Happy, happy holidays to you! Stay tuned for my own version of a merry mix coming to YHO (and you) later this week.

November Music Guide

You can get your live music fill this month, and still leave plenty of room for turkey….

stephen-malkmus.jpgFirst up, it’s the man himself. Stephen Malkmus plays with the Jicks on November 8 at Urban Lounge. Genius musician Malkmus, of Pavement fame, began his solo gig in 1999 and lucky for us, he’s still going strong. As for the Jicks, who will be playing backup, this band includes former members of Elastica and Sleater-Kinney. It doesn’t get much better than that, if you catch them live.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Dragonfly Pie”

rachael-yamagata.jpgWhere can you see Rachael Yamagata, Thao Nguyen and Meiko in one night? Make it one for the ladies at the Avalon Theater on November 12. The Hotel Cafe Tour features a handful of headlining bands that know how to jam. In its fourth year, the lineup includes the above-mentioned crooners as well as Kate Havnevik, Lenka and Emily Wells. Preview their voices here. Trust me, this isn’t your average Lilith Fair. And men, you’re invited too.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Beat” by Thao Nguyen

bishop-allen.jpgBishop Allen’s “The Broken String” easily made my list of favorite albums in 2007. Before Vampire Weekend made it big, these also-Brooklyners were ahead of the game with “Charm School” under their belt. With light, string-infused melodies, this quartet carries their tunes with appealing lyrics and awesome crescendos (see “Flight 180″). Check them out on November 14 at Kilby Court.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Click Click Click Click”

of-montreal.jpgOf Montreal is currently out in support of their recent release, “Skeletal Lamping.” This eccentric band brings a refreshing take on pop by fusing old and new school. You’ll hear harpsichord combined with synthesized beats, topped with fanciful lyrics. Lead by vocalist Kevin Barnes, you’ll be in for a treat at their live show. (He’s known for provocative performances.) See for yourself at Murray Theater on November 17.

Listen here. Suggested track: “An Eluardian Instance”

Also, be sure not to miss Mason Jennings on November 20 or thee band of the year, Coldplay, on November 22.

And mark your calendars: sultry singer Adele is visiting on January 23.

October Music Guide

Monday, October 6th, 2008

By Lacey Jane Pappas

oct_img.gif
Last month, we were overly spoiled with the number of talented acts passing through Salt Lake City. This month, we’re just as lucky. Here are my picks for must-see live music for October:

fleet-foxes.jpgWe highlighted Fleet Foxes when they were scheduled to play in July. Unfortunately, they canceled the show when they began touring with Wilco. Have no fear, you still have a chance to catch up with them. Fleet Foxes will be the headlining band on October 16 at In the Venue. With flawless harmonies and spot-on timing, this new “it” band has got their act together.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Mykonos”

jolie-holland.jpgIf you’re quick to fall for a heavenly voice, you’ll soon be tripping all over Jolie Holland. A founding member of the Be Good Tanyas and Shortlist Music winner, Jolie’s already-accomplished musical career is still taking off. Her folk release debuting this month, “The Living and the Dead,” has untried melodies that are music to your ears. See ‘em come alive on October 22 at the Urban Lounge.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Love Henry”

asobi-seksu.jpgSo folk isn’t your thing. How about an evening with Asobi Seksu? This band experiments with layers of mellow-meets-pop sounds guided by lead singer Yuki Chikudate. The Japanese/English group is holding on to the success they garnered from “Citrus,” a release warmly accepted on college radio stations and around the Internet. See how they blend live on October 25 at Kilby Court.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Stay Awake”

ray-lamontagne.jpgFinally, Ray LaMontagne’s live show comes to the Murray Theater on October 28. We’ve heard fantastic things about his live show; his passion for music is evident in his voice—like Van Morrison and Jeff Buckley, raspy and warm. With a little jazz and bluesy flair, you can’t help but feel good humming along.

Listen here. Suggested track: “You are the Best Thing”

September Music Guide

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

By Lacey Jane Pappas

septmusicticket.gif

Welcome to September! I’m excited to highlight this month’s music scene, as there are lots of fantastic bands sopping by SLC. Do yourself a favor and get out and see live music. You’ll be happy you did. Here are my picks for this month:

blitzen.jpgIf you like Beck, try Portland natives Blitzen Trapper at Kilby Court on September 11. With staggered rhythms and bits of twang, this band is definitely worth checking out—especially if alt country is fast becoming your favorite music genre. (Like me.)

Listen here. Suggested track: “Preachers”

For something totally diverse, tune into the pop-transforming, energy-packed, synthesizing troupe CSS. The Brazilian band is tired of being sexy. (CSS is the abbreviation for “Cansei de ser sexy.” Portuguese for … you guessed it.) Check them out at In the Venue on September 15; they’re playing with Tilly and the Wall, to sweeten the deal.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Give Up”

rara.jpgShow me a band with cello and violin, and I’m all ears. Add hummable melodies and catchy beats, and I’m in love. Meet Ra Ra Riot. They’re not as heavy as the name implies—rather, the sound is lullaby-ish with a nice balance of beats. Ra-ra with them on September 17 at Kilby Court.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Dying is Fine”

Dr. Dog’s newest album, “Fate,” has been on repeat over here for a while. The Philadelphia act brings out-of-the-box tracks that feature longing lyrics, experimental melodies and unusual rhythms. If you’re in a music funk, make an appointment with this doc on September 26 at the Urban Lounge.

Listen here. Suggested track: “The Breeze”

sigur-ros.jpgAnd last but certainly not least, Icelandic speculate Sigur Ros will be playing at Saltair on September 28. They’re the perfect soundtrack band, as their songs are filled with cool energy and substance. We’ve heard wonders about their live shows. Do yourself a favor and check ‘em out.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Festival”

August Music Guide

Monday, August 11th, 2008

augustmusicticket.gif
August already? The summer’s fleeting fast, but it’s not too late to take advantage of the warm summer nights and (free) live music.

Salt Lake is saving the best for last with the Twilight Concert Series. Book your Thursday evenings stat! You won’t want to miss out on these bands:

clap.jpgThis Thursday: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. If you’re into Talking Heads and/or David Byrne, this could be a match. It didn’t take long for the popularity of this once-solo band to get signed and then release a 2007 album “Some Loud Thunder.” Rock out (while clapping and yeah-ing, of course) at the Gallivan Center.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Is This Love”

neko.jpgNext Thursday: Stunning songstress Neko Case will be gracing us with her presence on August 28. The alternative country singer/songwriter has an accomplished repertoire of musical contributions, my favorite of which is 2006’s “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.” As a whimsical storyteller with stunning vocals to boot, Case’s show can’t be missed. Seriously.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Star Witness”

bob.jpgAnd finally, if you’ve never had the chance to see Mr. Tambourine Man himself, get thee to Bob Dylan’s show on August 31. He’ll be playing at Deer Valley, the perfect venue for such a legendary performer (just don’t forget a blanket and a good jacket). You know you want to tell your grandkids that you heard the Bob play live.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Like a Rolling Stone”

Others to pencil in:

  • Great Lake Swimmers on August 14
  • Broken Social Scene on August 21

And, upcoming:

  • Sigur Ros on September 28. Tickets here
  • Coldplay on November 22. Tickets here
