Kaleidoscope Provo Utah

Look into a kaleidoscope and you’ll see a myriad of attractive images, where every flick of your wrist produces a fresh graphic design. Step into Kaleidoscope boutique in Orem’s Riverwoods and you’ll also see fresh design at every turn: from pretty smocks to smart purses to artisan jewelry, fragrant candles and colorful quilts—and all with an original classy-meets-kitschy vibe we are totally feelin’.

A friendly upscale boutique, Kaleidoscope carries some of the most unique and interesting products we’ve seen locally. We loved a set of embroidered Jonather Adler-esque state-themed pillows (of course Utah was our favorite though Wyoming definitely had game); a hutch spewing with hand-stitched dishtowels and itty bitty cake trays and teacups; dressforms clad in aprons crafted by local designers; and rich-smelling lotions and potions that always seemed to appear right under our noses.

Kaleidoscope Provo Utah 3

This Kaleidoscope is an eclectic wonderland. Expect to see ’40s-reminiscent polka-dot dresses, zebra pinafores and empire-waisted frocks by the likes of Trashy Diva, Deborah Sweeney, Violette and Odd Molly. We were stunned by the specialty shoe collection that features pumps and wedges from lines like Poetic License, Klub Nico and Faryl Robin. (Sigh).

Kaleidoscope Provo Utah 2

With a surprisingly vast collection of twee housewares, you can shop Kaleidoscope for a dainty wedding gift (or you can always turn to their sweet-and-sassy lingerie corner.) With a handful of little onesie-and-bootie ensembles, you could also pop by before the baby shower. But it’s the assortment of to-die-for dresses and smocks that you’ll want to shower yourself with.

Check It Out

This week, the young at heart can eat their hearts out. Pun(s) intended.

Mama Mia Salt Lake (3)Gimme Gimme Gimme: Remember holding the hand of your crush and gliding across Classic Skating’s smooth-as-ice floors to “Dancing Queen?” Relive the golden years with Broadway America’s “Mamma Mia!,” playing at Capitol Theatre this week, where you can unabashedly shake your groove thing to such hits as “Man After Midnight” and “S.O.S.” No crush necessary. See the tour dates and get tickets here.

The Kids Are Alright: Who says the Beehive State is lacking style? Check out SLC Pomp, a sort of far-out Sartorialist documenting Salt Lake street fashion. Gather up some inspiration for your next outfit (OK, or costume) right here.

Breakfast Club (2)Don’t You Forget: See John Hughes at his best when “The Breakfast Club” takes the silver screen as the Tower’s Midnight Movie this weekend. Best part, other than young Emilio and Molly? Free “breakfast club” sausages and PB&J sandwiches sans crusts. Get the details here.

Urban Living: Quick: which store would you rather have an employee discount to: Urban Outfitters or Anthropologie? Kill two birds with one stone and become a manager or merchandiser at Urban Outfitter’s Salt Lake store (yes, they’re sister companies). Check out the necessary credentials here. (And what’s with this “opening in winter 2007″ business?)

America's IdolIdol Worship: Did your favorite get voted off the island before you had your fill? Here’s your opportunity to throw some love Sanjaya’s way. “American Idol’s” finalists take the Delta Center (Scratch that. We meant Energy Solutions Arena) by storm tomorrow night. Get some last-minute tickets here.

Movin’ On Up: Two of the area’s youngest cities, Daybreak and Cottonwood Heights, got a shout-out from national mags for offering good livin’. Check it out here and here.

Mall Rats: Does the Piercing Pagoda ring a bell? Trendz? The Bead Connection? The Goldmine? It’s been a while since the glory days of the Cottonwood Mall. But by 2010, it’ll be a whole new animal, complete with living spaces, boutiques and riverside walking trails. Sounds nice; we just hope Hot Dog On a Stick stays put. Get more info here.

Thanks Y’all

ThankYouForReading

According to our calculations, we’ve been at this blogging thing for 235 days. Make that 235 glorious days; we’ve had so much fun spilling the beans about Salt Lake and making friends with our readers. (How are things in the Big Apple, Ecce?)

Our numbers have grown exponentially since our virgin post in December of last year and we have only YOU to thank. Because, really, a blog (of this kind) is nothing without its readers. Some of you have been so tried and true, we’d like to give you a big virtual hug and treat you to a day at Sanctuary Day Spa.

But right now, what we need is a big virtual hug from you. Pretty please tell us how we’re doing and take a quick minute to fill out this online survey so we can keep this moving in the right direction. Would you like to see more recipes and less eateries? Are you sick of all this local-only mumbo jumbo or is it what you treasure most? Here’s your chance to let us know. You can spout off at your own free will—anonymity provided.

Really, we couldn’t thank you enough for taking this survey.

{Who wants a button:} And because we count on you to keep those numbers moving upward, we would love it if you would add this cute little button to your blog or website, so all your fans can feel the Your Heart Out love. Or simply add us to your blogroll.

Show and Tell: Ali’s Favorite Spot

Thursday, July 26th, 2007
Ali's Office 1

I work from home a lot these days. My small desk-without-a-chair and the lack of push-pinnable surface areas in my home office had me a bit lost and a bit unproductive. So with $300 in my pocket I set out to give the ol’ home office a cheap-and-cute makeover.

Ali's Office 2

It is now one of my favorite spots. I covered 2′ x 4′ cork boards from Target with a poppy $12 curtain set from IKEA so I can pushpin to my heart’s delight. Also from IKEA, an extra-long $30 desk and $14 teal-colored chair. Spiffed up with some favorite relics like our Tri-Vane fan, Crosley radio, seashells from Costa Rica, vintage globe and the $1 IKEA mobile I’ve had forever, I feel right at home. Err, home office. (And I came in way under budget!)

Remember to send in photos of your favorite spot to hello@yourheartout.com. It doesn’t have to be an entire room—just give us a glimpse of a vantage point in your house that you like to see/be in each day. We’ll like to see it, too!

Indochine

Indochine

Around here, we love a good makeover. That’s why we’re pretty excited about a new University-area Vietnamese joint that gave a sad and tired-looking structure on 1300 East a fresh and semi-exotic face.

Indochine, as its called, has happily made its home in the vacant unit between Aristo’s and Einstein’s—in the same spot where many a ’90s U of U student was swooned by the tunes from a James Taylor wannabe as he or she chowed on thin-crust pizza at legendary Gepettos.

Though you won’t hear “Fire and Rain” this time around (at least not live), you can look forward to a sweet-sounding and diverse menu that includes classics like Pad Thai and Moo Goo Gai Pan alongside “Carmelized Pork” (marinated chop cuts, twice cooked with onions in a sweet and savory sauce, $9.99), “Tofu Braised in Tangy Tomato Sauce” (also $9.99), and “Sizzling Crepe” (assemble-as-you-eat shrimp and pork, with herbs, lettuce, cucumber and garlic-lime sauce, $10.99). If you’re looking for a starter, we daresay Indochine’s lettuce wraps are some of the best.

Good food plus healthy portions plus cool atmosphere plus friendly service = good times.

FireworksOne of the greatest things about living in Utah is that you basically get two Fourth of Julys: double the barbecues, double the firecrackers, double the parades, double the fun.

We’ll be back tomorrow, but hope y’all have a happy 24th aka “Pioneer Day!” Check out this list from the Days of ’47 crew to see what’s going on around town. Cheers!

Mr French Paper

Via comment, Aubrey recently introduced us to online paper store-and-so-much-more French Paper. Merci beaucoup, mademoiselle!

Don’t be fooled by French Paper’s so-right-now website or the exotic name, this company is actually a family-run American operation that’s been around since 1871. (Check out these old pics.) True, you can find all kinds of paper at Salt Lake’s Xpedx. But your paper-lovin’ heart can turn to French Paper when you’ve got out-of-the-ordinary paper, gift or even design needs. Items/features that set French Paper apart:

Custom color jobs: they’ll make any color you like.

“Pop Ink” products that “merge low art and high design into an infinite visual universe that includes happy kittens, goth zombies, and wallpaper dolls. Our goal is to create saccharine sweet, slightly disturbing yet strangely compelling art and artifacts for the (post) modern world.” Well said.

Wrapping PaperNapkinsPlateMr French

  • Exhibit A: Cool/quirky gift wrap.
  • Exhibit B: Kitschy/cute napkins.
  • Exhibit C: Dinnerware fit for your walls.
  • Exhibit D: Books to complete your “saccharine sweet” library.

CSA Images: Photography and illustrations sure to liven up the front-end of any project.

Paper: All nicely organized under so-cool, flashy headers.

We might not speak Le French, but French Paper is totally speaking our language.

Cupcake Party: You’re Invited

Cupcake party 2

If there’s one thing Salt Lake needs more of, it’s cupcake parties. Who doesn’t love sweet miniature cakes?

Just when we thought it was a lost cause, Salt Lake artist and boutique owner Gentry Blackburn comes to the rescue with the city’s first-ever Cupcake Social. (Why didn’t we think of this? And how precious is that all-felt delicacy?)

This party fit for the young (if ill-fated) French queen starts tomorrow night at Frosty Darling—that super-fun store on 300 South we couldn’t wait to tell you about. If you haven’t browsed the store’s eye candy lately, now’s the perfect opportunity: The premier Cupcake Social will feature cupcake art (hello, Thiebaud fans!) like drawings, paintings … even sculpture, all from local artists. Oh yes, there will be the edible kind, too.

Frosty Darling will also be debuting its brand-new shoe collection including colorful and coy flats from wallet-friendly lines like Dollhouse, City Snappers, Qupid, Bamboo, Soda and more.

Shoe-shopping and cupcakes in the same place at the same time? We know, you might die from a sensory overload. But there are worse ways to go. Just ask Marie.

Meet Nicole

Hatched2

NicoleWhat do celebrity photographer Matthew Jordan Smith, well-known stylist Susie Theodorou and the cover of Saveur magazine have in common? Each have featured the work of local gal Nicole Hill.

Nicole is a freelance and commercial photographer based in Utah County. There’s no question that this girl knows what she’s doing when it comes to the camera lens. And her sharp sense of style and warm personal charisma have a way of making themselves present in the images she captures—whether of a wedding or watercress.

A budding talent, Nicole has already taken noteworthy career strides and snapped handfuls of great images. But what we love about this Utah girl is her go-getter attitude and her knack for choosing fun and eclectic vehicles for realizing her dreams: ne’er afraid to make a capricious pit-stop or follow leads from Mr. Opportunity.

Her romance with the camera started when Nicole’s (smart) parents gave her a Canon Rebel G for her birthday in 7th grade. By the time her first year of high school rolled around, she ended up co-teaching her school’s photography class and shooting her first weddings.

Nicole8Nicole4Nicole6Nicole7

After graduating a year early from high school, Nicole headed to the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. When she realized she was more interested in capturing food than people, she traded the sunshine for the city and headed to culinary school in New York. “I thought that learning more about food couldn’t hurt,” she says.

While in the Big Apple, she interned with beauty and celebrity photographer Matthew Jordan Smith, and assisted food stylist Susie Theodorou for projects in Real Simple, House & Garden, and Gourmet. Last year’s June issue had a steak she grilled on the cover. We like a girl who’s good on the barbi.

After returning to Brooks to receive her bachelor’s degree, Nicole traded coasts again and moved to Boston to intern with TV’s “America’s Test Kitchen” and Cook’s Illustrated, where she worked directly with such heavy hitters as celebrity chef Julia Collin Davison. Then it was back to New York for a quick internship with Saveur magazine, where she styled a cover shot, and assisted with food styling for Real Simple and Quick & Simple.

Nicole planned a trip home to Utah, just for the summer, but ended up getting happily hung-up on a position as photo editor and photographer with a local stock photography company called Rubberball Productions, where she’s been for a year. We daresay they’re happy to have her. And so are we.

Nicole1Nicole5Nicole3Nicole2

Check out Nicole’s work at:

Nicole has a fun-and-stylish blog playfully titled A Little Sussy, a great daily read. A new, all-cooking blog called Nicole Cooks is currently in the works. (We know the food featured there is gonna look fabulous.) In her spare time, Nicole also designs websites. But here’s a chance to get a little more info than the blog might provide:

Name: Nicole Hill

Occupation: Photo Editor/Photographer

When I grow up, I want to be: A teacher, artist and mother

The best thing about growing up in Utah was: Four seasons! I loved my spring birthday, summers skiing at Lake Powell, horsing around in the fall and winters skiing in Deer Valley.

If/when I have 24 hours in Utah, I always:

1. Have “Sundee” dinner on the back porch with family and friends.

2. Eat at Cafe Rio

3. Eat homemade frozen yogurt

4. Talk (or cry) to my sisters and parents on their bed.

5. Play my piano

Utah has the best: Parking lots! They’re huge!

Now I live in: Orem; just bought a home!

Five hearts:

  • Homemade froyo
  • Fresh herbs
  • Eating on the back deck
  • Pilates
  • Rook

Five hates:

  • Mortgage payments
  • Mean people
  • Running
  • Early mornings
  • Shopping on an empty stomach

I can’t live without my: Computer

The last party I went to was: Hmm … I can’t even remember one. How sad. I’m not cool.

Favorite product on your blog: I’m still obsessed with the Me & Ro diamond ring I found years ago that was just featured in Martha Stewart Weddings.

Favorite product on earth: Dead Sea Salt eye cream

FranklinCovey Giveaway
You know how it is. You’ve got somewhere to be (brunch with friends, business luncheon, hair appointment, parent-teacher conference) and you can’t find your car keys. You want to set up the next appointment with your stylist, but you’ve forgotten your planner. It looks like a business luncheon will require follow-up, but you’ve misplaced your business cards. Again.

Multi-tasking ain’t easy. And looking stylish all the while? Even triple threats like actress-singer-model Lindsay Lohan can’t keep it together despite a handful of assistants.

Salt Lake City’s own FranklinCovey makes staying put-together a cinch thanks to its stylish and upscale collection of business totes. In both clean-and-preppy and distressed leathers, these helpers are smart and easy on the eyes: cute enough for everyday use, but sharp enough to match your new pinstriped suit. Check out the selection right here.

Like most things, the real beauty comes from the inside. An attractive, red Emily Business Tote comes with pockets for your phone, PDA, laptop, cards—even neat, no-wiggle pen loops. You can complete the set with a matching day planner binder, which features adorable contrast piping.

Ah, the sweet smell of commonsense and style. Oh, and the sweet smell of genuine leather, too. Who knows what could happen if Miss Lohan got her hands on one of these organizing wonders—maybe, like, a decent album? One can always hope.

Corner

If you’re lucky enough to have your entire house (or townhouse, condo,—maybe even your bedroom or simply your closet) just the way you like it, we envy you. Though the entourage of glossies that arrives in your mailbox each month might have you think otherwise, most of us just have a few places in our homes that we call “just right.”

For Maeve, its the buffet/console/sideboard in her main room, dressed up with playful relics and a poppy Warhol print. Ali likes the little batch of modern handcloths, vintage ceramics, colorful soaps and minty candles that sweeten the counter of her small bathroom.

It might be your entire basement re-do, or the simple art spread you’ve created above your sofa. Whatever it is, we want to see it! Bringing the best of local (and non-local, too!) house-peeping right to your desktop, we ask that you send in photos of your favorite (cool, pretty, cute) spot in your house. Because we’re all looking for a dose of inspiration and love to share ideas.

Don’t forget to give us any additional info: the story behind your sleek porcelain birds or where you scored that Eames-esque rocking chair, and WHY you love this spot as much as you do.

You send the photos, we’ll post them. Send your pics to hello@yourheartout.com with “favorite spot” in the subject line.

The above image captures a colorful spot in Maeve’s turn-of-the-century bungalow. She scored the Warhol print at the Warhol Store, the “Coink” piggy bank from Karkula, and the shapely artichokes from Hip & Humble.

Millcreek Cafe

What’ll it be? Omelette? Pancake? Waffle? Breakfast wrap? Breakfast panini? 3300 South’s hoppin’ little breakfast-and-lunch joint called Millcreek Cafe and Eggworks serves it all with quality ingredients and a hint of panache—whether you take ‘em sunny-side up or like ‘em over easy.

We popped in the cafe last week for brunch, and were greeted by nice servers and tasty dishes. Though they’re tough things to mess up, we’re happy to report that both the French Toast ($6.25) and Chicken Caesar Wrap (with fries, $6.75) got an A+.

Breakfast is served all day (’til 2 p.m.) with the lunch menu opening at 11 a.m. Breakfast-types can look forward to dishes like a Breakfast Wrap smothered With Chili Verde ($7.50); a “Millcreek Mound” (includes two eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, ham sausage, and cheese mixed together, with toast, $7.50); Veggie Eggs Benedict ($8.75); or a Fruit and Yogurt Parfait ($3.99).

Now that you’re hungry, we’ll tell you a little about lunch. You can try classics like burgers, wraps, soups, salads and paninis—all fairly priced and served sans-frills.

We like that Millcreek Cafe and Eggworks feels fresh and friendly and perfectly local-centric; a place where shortstacks like us would be happy to become a regular.

This comes straight from my music library, but I’d love to know what works for you. Is there a song that really motivates you? Share your thoughts in the comments, so we can create a killer Get-Movin’ playlist; maybe we’ll even be able to compile Volume II. Think of the miles we’ll get through….

Strawberry Soup

Here’s a three-in-one recipe you can’t refuse, though you might have never heard of it. Or maybe even imagined it.

This soup is a strawberry-lover’s dream come true. With a recipe that’s as easy-as-pie, Strawberry Soup can be your minute man when you’re tired of pre-dinner salads, when you’re looking for a non-typical summer dessert—it’ll even work as a light lunch option on days when your sweet tooth can’t be satiated. (And that happens more than we care to admit.)

Try it light with reduced- or sans-fat creams, or keep it real for a berry-sweet taste that isn’t to be rivaled. Just remember to chill before serving. That goes for you and the soup.

Below is the cinchy recipe, but you can download the recipe card here.

Ingredients:
1 qt. fresh strawberries (or 16 oz. frozen)
1 C. sour cream
1 C. light cream
1/4 C. sugar
2 Tbsp. rum or 1 Tbsp. rum flavoring

Directions:
Blend all ingredients in processor. Chill before serving. Optional garnishes include sliced strawberries, whole raspberries, whole blueberries and mint leaves.

Voila! We told you it was easy.

Doorprize Winners: Eliza Magazine

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

ElizaMagWe love getting all Oprah-esque and dabbling in sweepstakes. We might not be able to ship you to Salt Lake City and treat you to spa days, lunches at our favorite cafes and overnights in the city’s swankiest hotels—at least not yet—but giving stuff away still gives us a little thrill.

Especially when it’s a cool new magazine that we get to treat four people to. Our winners of year subscription to Eliza magazine are:

  • Jocelyn S.
  • Carly Y.
  • Nicole H.
  • Aimee H.

We’ll be contacting you via e-mail soon to gather your subscription information.

Thanks, Eliza!
