SJS3Oh, lucky you, Nanette. You were selected as the winner to the Sarah Jane Studios giveaway. We can’t wait to see which you pick. We know we could never decide on just two.

Spoon Me

Spoon Me Salt Lake City UT 1

A hip new froyo spot has made its home not on the streets of L.A. or NYC, but Salt Lake’s 400 South. If you step into Spoon Me for a post-dinner chocolate-flavored treat you might be taken aback. Don’t expect to see the typical swirls that characterize most frozen yogurt and ice cream joints. Spoon Me features trendy all-natural yogurt, like its cosmopolitan counterparts, in just two flavors: natural and green tea.

Spoon Me goes to show that sometimes less is more. The two flavors are quite tasty, if natural “plain” yogurt flavor is your thing. (It’s definitely ours.) It’s so good topped with mangoes and strawberries, or any selection of cold cereals like Cap’n Crunch or Fruity Pebbles. Perhaps most interesting, these sweet treats are said to work as a meal replacement, should you so decide. Most are under 100 calories and packed with Vitamin C, calcium and protein.

Spoon Me Salt Lake City UT 2

That’s good and all, but we’re most excited to have a yummy new treat spot in SLC. It’s possible you’ll feel extra good chowin’ down here, with your spoon made of compressed corn starch, Ecotainer cup constructed of corn—even the supersoft uniforms worn by employees are made of recycled and organic linens.

At Spoon Me, you’ll pay anywhere from $2.50 to $6.75 for your cup of goodness, depending on flavor and toppings (green tea is more pricey than natural). The Spoon Me crew just started up the “Noon Spoon” where you can get a dollar off any “Half-Spoon” or larger yogurt when you come in between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Harvest Boutique

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007
HarvestBoutiqueMain

Our favorite definitions for “harvest” from our go-to site reads something like this:

1. To gather.

2. The result or consequence of any act, process, or event.

3. To gain, win, acquire or use.

“Harvest,” then, seems to be the perfect name for this holiday boutique, hosted by some our favorite local and not-so-local bloggers and crafters—who have undoubtedly been slaving away for months to make sure that the rest of us could have a piece (or two or three) of their creative genius. Luckily for us.

HBstuff

The Harvest Boutique boasts perfect-for-gifting, only-homespun and made-with-love items like quilts, home decor, stationery, sweets, fashion accessories, and more. (Now there’s a harvest for you.) Hit up the Draper locale with your favorite gal-pals and get your polished fingernails on quilted-and-embroidered pincushions by Whitney, tiered-and-ruffly aprons by Kelly, quilted tablerunners by Abby, and gift tags, notecards and journals by Marta.

{Doorprize!}

HBgiftBasketThe Harvest gang would like to gift one lucky YHO reader with a one-of-a-kind gift basket. The up-for-grabs loot includes a pincushion, an apron, a quiltrunner, mini diaries and scalloped gift tags. Wanna be the lucky one? (We know you do….) Leave just one comment on this post by 10 p.m. on Monday, October 22.

And since only one reader can win, don’t forget to stop by the boutique and gather up your own harvest!

Jacket Weather

Monday, October 15th, 2007

The 10-Day forecast only goes to show that right here, right now, with a mix of chilly-but-sunny and rain-filled days, it’s classic jacket weather. Whether worn atop your trusty zip-up hoodie or ‘neath your favorite overcoat, a good jacket will easily extend beyond the first snow. (Oh wait, we already had that. A long time ago.)

Here are some of our current picks, since semi-sunny days are back. Just follow the image links when you find one you fancy.

Soel Boutique

Soel Main

We weren’t kidding when we said a shopping daytrip to Provo is good for the soul. Err … Soel.

Soel boutique in Provo turns up plenty of soul food in the form of carefully-crafted apparel packed with embellishments and trendy details. We spied with our little eyes pieces we wouldn’t mind stocking our closets with from favorites like Ella Moss, Free People, Michael Stars, French Connection, Diesel and Splendid—whether it’s a chunky sweater, urban trench or supersoft tee.

Or you might find a Soel mate in a pair of leather Dollhouse T-strap heels or sleek All Black flats. You’ll also see shoes from DV, Frye and Beviel. Other novelties include smallish doodads like magnets, Jill Bliss notecards, Orla Kiely bags and patterned umbrellas.

Soel 2

Despite the fact that a good portion of Soel’s square footage is devoted to a yoga studio, the arts and crafts-influenced showroom remains sizey, with nooks for baby stuffs (a crib stocked with sock monkeys) and goods for gents (think Ben Sherman, G Star and Modern Amusement). Also stuffed into baskets, antique shelving systems and across vintage tabletops are porcelain bowls, stockings, picture frames, serving trays, recipe books and oven mitts—perfect for the collective soul.

Even if it’s taken out on your wallet, a trip to Soel is good for the heart and soul, especially if you’re a nay-sayer on behalf of Utah’s shopping potential. We daresay this one could change you, inside and out. (Remember the yoga studio….)

Found in Salt Lake City

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

This week we extended our search to include KSL Classifieds alongside old reliable Craigslist. Let’s just say the selection is anything but lacking: There’s a lot to be pilfered through, that’s for sure. Heavy on retro and modern influences, here are a few odds and ends that might be worth an inquiry e-mail or two this week. Just click on the images to get more info.
Found6
We’re not as crazy about the chairs as we are the diner-style table. But maybe the Lehi owner could be talked into selling the items separately? Could be worth a shot.

Found2
Every child’s playroom—maybe even bedroom—needs a classic-meets-poppy reddish-orange school desk. At only $20 you can experiment with it in your own bedroom if you want.

Found5
Not our very most favorite set, though that white certainly draws the eye, but given the right environment, this arrangement could shine. Looks like everything pictured is included, all for $2100.

Found4
So cute and so red … perhaps paired with the table pictured at the top of the list?

Found3
It’s $1500 but beautiful and sizey. And supposedly a bonafied Knoll piece.

Sarah Jane Studios

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007
SJSmain

Who wouldn’t want to get their hands of some of the amazingly cute and artful illustrations by Sarah Jane of Sarah Jane Studios? You don’t even need to have a children’s room in your house or a bun in the oven to want these beauties decorating your walls. Her pieces are just the kind of thing you want to look at before you turn in for the night. (See here.)

We love that Sarah’s subtle illustrations are colorful and sweet but filled with art and style. Her unique and simplistic look results from growing up with a pencil (or crayon) in her hand, fine art training in her youth, and, of course, reading lots of children’s literature. She now uses her own children as her muses, and rejoices in the fact that their favorite children’s book illustrators are the same as her own: Arnold Lobel (of “Frog and Toad”), Maurice Sendak (“Where the Wild Things Are”), and Antoine de Saint-Exupery (“Le Petit Prince”). In Sarah’s own words: “They say that your first impressions of art as a child serve as your main inspiration as an illustrator, and it is so true.”

Sarah recently started up her Sarah Jane Etsy shop and blog called “Illustrating Childhood.”

SJS3SJS4SJS2SJS1

Here are some of our favorite things in the shop:

Since Sarah’s shop is a shy five days old, she’s offering a free set of Halloween Cards with her first 50 orders. We might be more inclined to frame these than send them off to our fellow Halloween-lovers.

{Doorprize!} Sarah would like to gift one lucky YHO reader with a $40 gift certificate to her Etsy shop (good for two $20 pieces) as well as a complimentary set of Halloween cards. Woohoo! Want in on the action? Just leave one comment on this post by 10 p.m. on Monday, October 15.

Ask Your Heart Out: Spa Day

Monday, October 8th, 2007
Ask YHO

Here’s a question we get time and time again. If we knew the answer to this one, we’re sure we would be happier, healthier, more relaxed … and probably equipped with perpetually glowing and silky-smooth skin.

Heidi wrote in looking for a good spa. (Aren’t we all?) She’s not necessarily looking for the area’s best deep tissue massage or mani-pedi. Rather, she just wants to treat a friend to a nice day at a nice spa where she can choose from a myriad of self-pampering options and be treated well.

So let’s make that friend happy. Any input, anyone?

Emily’s Favorite Spot

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Fave Spot1
Check out the favorite spot of our girl Emily C. This California lady lives in in a small flat with a roommate, thus her personal space is both minimal and treasured. We love Emily’s young-yet-sophisticated sense of style, and her knack for pairing pieces that don’t obviously belong together.

For starters, Emily repurposed an IKEA bathroom organizer as a mini dresser. We love the fresh paint pallette she employed. Resting atop the dresser are a mix of sculptural pieces that include antique ceramic alphabet letters and a broken piece of her friend Amanda’s artwork. Beneath all of this is what she calls her trusty “hold-everything treasure chest.”
Fave Spot2

The spot’s highlight is a piece of Emily’s newest artistic venture. The equestrian-inspired collage showcased on the wall features a frame of antique stamps and buttons offset with a trio of “saddle club” ribbons (none of which are actually hers). We’re hoping an Etsy shop is on its way. For now, skip on over to her blog and check out her bracelets.

Thanks for sharing, Emily!

Lacey’s Music Guide: October

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

oct_img.gif

I did a double-take when I first spotted this pairing: Rachel Yamagata joins Mandy Moore (yes, the “Candy” singer turned uber-popular-chick-flick actress) in Salt Lake on October 6. Yamagata is due for a new album, though her 2004 release, “Happenstance,” is still current. Yamagata sports a powerful voice and tells beautiful lost-love stories. When she opens for now-folk singer Mandy Moore, it could be the makings of a great girl’s night.

Listen here. Suggested track: “I’ll Find a Way”

Another great opening act takes place when Bishop Allen ushers in John Vanderslice on October 13 at Kilby Court. Bishop Allen became popular by way of blogging word-of-mouth. They released 53 songs without signing to a label.

Luckily, they made it on NPR’s airwaves and they soon became an up-and-comer favorite. Bishop Allen employs a staggering variety of instruments—from strings to piano—that make their tunes easy to get lost in. Slow vocals provide a nice balance to the mini-orchestra of music.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Flight 180″

San Diego favorites Pinback return to Salt Lake on October 20 to play in support of their recent release, “Autumn of the Seraphs.” What makes Pinback cool is their uncanny ability to rely on vocals and inventive rhythms: Frontmen Armistead Burwell Smith and Rob Crow create a contest of sounds as one croons the lyrics while the other chimes in as an echo, or uses his voice as a supplemental instrument.

For Pinback 101, start with their early self-titled album from 1999. (Tip: Pinkback’s music makes a perfect soundtrack for almost any cardio workout, as a bonus.)

Listen here. Suggested track: “Loro”

Other promising show on the docket include Interpol with the Shout Out Louds, Morrissey and Architecture in Helsinki.

Or listen in at any of these:

What’s Hot

Whats Hot

The similarity to Paris Hilton’s trademark catch phrase may make you want to steer clear, but we suggest you give Provo’s What’s Hot a second chance.

Instead of seeing Tinkerbell T-shirts, What’s Hot will surprise you with its sassy and stylish inventory. Open since 2004, this boutique’s focus has been on cosmopolitan designer denim for the last few years. The majority of the showroom’s white shelves are stocked with skinnies and wide-legs from Frankie B., Rock and Republic, Citizens of Humanity, True Religion, Paige and more—a collection that rivals Nordstrom and JMR.

Much as we love new jeans, especially in fall, we were most impressed with the wall of shoes hiding out in the back room. What’s Hot sports a splendid floor-to-ceiling selection of trendy designs from the likes of Steve Madden alongside a handful of styles from both Coach and Marc by Marc Jacobs—another collection we don’t think we’ve seen anywhere else.

What else is hot at What’s Hot? Handbags and more handbags. Smartened-up hobos and distressed leather clutches from Isabella Fiore, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs.

Don’t let the designer names scare you off. Whether you’re looking for a new set of denim duds or a Petunia Picklebottom diaper bag (or some Coach-patterned high tops), give What’s Hot a try. After all, it is What’s Hot.

{Sweet Deal:} Stop by What’s Hot, pick out some favorites, and drop our name (Your Heart Out, just in case you forgot) at checkout, and enjoy a 10 percent discount! Thanks, What’s Hot.

Tights

If the freeeezing weather this weekend didn’t have you convinced that tights are the way to go when the temps get low, perhaps the well-clad Coach Bleecker ladies will. (How cute is that campaign?) Cute under tunics, dresses—even shorts—this season’s leg-covering staple comes in every color of the rainbow.

We’re especially fond of the gray, eggplant and chocolate tones. Here are some starters….
