Tuesday, November 27th, 2007It could be for your little bro, your little niece or the little one of your very own. And you have to admit, these gifts are so fun/cute you wouldn’t mind picking up one for yourself (think Build Your Own Volcano and Lotta Jansdotter Soft Toys, as pictured below). Darlybird
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007
We love online boutique and gift emporium Darlybird for three semi-obvious reasons:
- The gal behind the online shop, Rachel Schutz, is one of our beloved Hatched ladies. (See here.)
- Darlybird sponsored one of YHO’s very first giveaways. (Which means you should love her, too.)
- Gift ideas galore. Seriously. From stocking stuffers to full-blown presents, the Darlybird selection is unrivaled.
Perhaps your mom-in-law would swoon over these Red Bubble Glass Bud Vases. Or your sister might go gaga for this Passion Pansy Pillow Cover. A Stationery Folio is sure to please, or try simple-and-uber-affordable options like lip balm or cute bobby pins for your besties.
Just head to the store to see what we mean: Gift shopping + Darlybird = TLA. There’s something for everybody. And don’t miss the new holiday collection. We love the Jingle All The Way bells garland.
{Doorprize!} Rachel still loves you, and wants to treat one YHO reader to a gift package that weighs in at over $100. The loot includes (prepare yourselves) a set of super-classy Freshwater Pearl Cluster Earrings ($18), a sweet and colorful Vera Wristlet Clutch ($24), graphic Mod Tulip Pillow Cover ($32), pretty and handy Alphabetique Rubber Stamps ($25) AND refreshing Perfumeria Peach Lip Balm ($5). Perfect timing for getting your shopping done in one swoop … or you could always keep the bundle for yourself. To win, leave just one comment on this post by 10 p.m. on Monday, December 3.
p.s. Stop by later today to see the second part of our gift guide!

YHO Gift Guide: For Her, $25 and Under
Monday, November 26th, 2007With Thanksgiving out of the way, it’s time to start those shopping engines. Last year we gave you 30 Gifts Under $30. This year, we’re offering (spectacular! spectacular!) YHO Gift Guide Week. You can stop by every day for categorized, easy-to-shop, gift-giving roadmaps—compiled with links to our favorite products from online retailers. We’ll also be popping in from time to time with gift ideas from our favorite local shops.
We’re kicking it off with a batch of $25-and-under trinkets, doodads and goodies for the ladies in your life. Follow the image links when you see an item that you—or that gal whose name you drew—might appreciate.
From how-to books to sleeping masks to paper products and plush booties, these are certain to warm her heart, or maybe her feet. And P.S., the monogrammed umbrella from Neiman Marcus reads $28 online, but in the catalog, we spied them for $19.99. Be sure to question the representative and get the right price!
Happy Thanksgiving
Thursday, November 22nd, 2007
Enjoy the holiday, friends. As we count our many thankful-fors this season, YOU, dear readers, have a place near the top of our list—besting goodies like hot water (or was it hot chocolate?) and liquid eyeliner. Yes, liquid. Have you tried it lately?
We’ll see you Monday, if not sooner. And THANK YOU SO MUCH for reading.

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007
We know, we know. We’re confusing you. But seeing as tomorrow’s a holiday and all, we thought it was only fair to publish the shortlist a day early. Next week, we’ll be back on track with our new Thursday slot. (Thanks so much for the feedback!) Here goes:
City Goes Pop: Head to downtown Salt Lake on Friday afternoon to be the first to partake in the illumination of the city. The city-wide shindig kicks off at 4 p.m. Lights On! features shopping and light displays on 300 South; ice skating, Santa and carolers at the Gallivan Rink; a whole lotta lights at Temple Square; and a Jon Schmidt concert at the Gateway … and probably handfuls of shoppers. Get the details (including parking tips) here.
Sales!: Perhaps you’re into pulling 4 a.m.-ers at places like Kohl’s and Mervyns and Old Navy, or having what’s practically a sleepover at Fashion Place Mall. There are probably quite a few more, but two local sales we’d like to mention include the Day After Thanksgiving Extravaganza at Real Deals, where the first 50 shoppers get free gifts, hot chocolate, or better, Diet Coke. Also pop into Soel Boutique on Saturday for all sorts of discounts, like 20-50 percent off select women’s items, as well as a $75 raffle. Details here.
In Cinema: Head over to the Broadway to see “I’m Not There,” (hello, Dylan fans), “Love in the Time of Cholera,” “My Kid Could Paint That,” or “The Darjeeling Limited.” Or, turn to Fandango to see what’s new in your hood: “Atonement” or “August Rush”? Or maybe just another go-round with “The Bee Movie” or “Dan in Real Life.”
In Mmmusic: Take your pick: Silverchair, Manheim Steamroller or Tori Amos (next Thursday). How’s that for variety? More via Lacey’s guide.
Pencil It In: The Beehive Bazaar homespun goods extravaganza takes place at the Covey Center for the Arts in Provo next Friday, November 30 and December 1. Wanna scope out the scene? Check the blog, and save the date.
Karisa Winkel Designs
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007
Check out the letterpress goods of local lady Karisa Winkel. Though each has no-doubt been tailored to her clients’ wants and needs, we love that her designs are colorful and classy with a nice tough of unexpected fashion-forwardness.
Commissioned invitations like “Emily” from her wedding collection are case-in-point. Also check out the unusual and artsy appeal of “Andolyn.” Another great example? Be sure to check out the “Kerilyn.”
Karisa Winkel Designs also do personal stationery, die-cutting, corner-rounding and other fancy things. Check out the list of services here.
Just Be…
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007
Hmmm. What’ll it be: Hand-sewn, hand-embellished skirt for your kiddo? Or personally-adorned, super-cute purse for you? It’s a tough choice, and it’s difficult to abstain from selfishness. Luckily, with the handiwork of Utah-based duo Just Be, you can have whichever you please … for you, or your little one.
Based out of Hyrum, Suzi Bates, with the help of her partner Jeni Carlson, whips up some of the most unique purses and kid-size skirts around. Bates graduated from Singer’s Sewing School at the wee age of 12, and has been stitchin’ up a storm ever since.
With Just Be, you might fall for the eggplant-colored flower stitched atop a bold, brocade-patterned purse (like this) or the ring of fuschia tulle that brightens the hem of a twirly skirt (like this). Or maybe it’ll just be a cute fabric applied to a great shapes, heavy on intricate details (like this, this or this.)
And on a side note, it’s also cool that Suzi and Just Be are big on giving back, whether it’s fabric scraps that make gloves for the homeless or gathering shoes to share with villagers in Africa.
{Darling Doorprize:} You can see Just Be’s items in boutiques from Illinois to Texas to France, but right now they’re focused on YHO readers. They’re going to gift THREE different winners with $50 gift certificates to the online shop, where new items are added all the time. Wanna win one of these beauties? Leave just one comment on this post by 10 p.m. on Monday, November 26. Good luck!
In the meantime, start your shopping. (‘Tis the season, after all. One of these wonders has your mother-in-law’s name on it.)

Turkey Lurking
Monday, November 19th, 2007
What’s that you say? You’ve procrastinated and now Tom Turkey is coming your way? Have no fear. YHO is here with tips, tricks, recipes and more to make your Thanksgiving anything but an icky bore.
Cooking for a crowd? Don’t hesitate to ask guests to bring side dishes and desserts that complement the main attraction. Or pretty please your favorite local bakery into preparing some rolls, cakes or pies that you can pick up the day before. (You can always turn to Marie Callender’s for pies—but order in advance, and perhaps Great Harvest for rolls.)
Throwing in the Towel? There’s still time to have the whole shebang catered: a sometimes-pricey-but-oh-so-attractive option for those who want to be thankful for a day of good food coupled with relaxation. Check out Wild Oats and Pinon Market and Cafe, along with any of these others in a fabulous list compiled by the Tribbies. See here.
Wanna Eat Out? Rumor has it that Little America, Creekside Restaurant at Solitude, and The Paris are ready and willing to serve up your Thanksgiving feast. (Anyone else have any other favorites?)
Still Stumped? Check out Real Simple’s life-saving Thanksgiving Cheat Sheet. It’s loaded with time-savers, make-ahead suggestions, opinions on the best boxed recipes, 60-second centerpieces and other ways to simplify the ordeal.
Or get thee hence to Williams-Sonoma, where loads of Thanksgiving foods, decor and bakeware are already on sale (we especially love the pumpkin bakeware and turkey tureens.)
Good luck, turkeys lurkeys. If we can do it, you can do it.
