Week Two: No Naps Necessary

totallyfitv2.gif

Your energy level isn’t something you spend much time thinking about. You only notice it when you have a surplus of it, or a serious lack thereof. Like, after you treat yourself to a box of Red Vines during “Juno” (sugar high!) or during the hours of 2 to 4 p.m. when you would rather be in bed than anywhere … especially not your cubicle. We all know keyboards don’t make good pillows.

The first thing Mike asked me this week when I went to meet him for my THF consultation was, “How’s your energy level?” I hadn’t thought about it. I hadn’t even noticed it. I know when I leave the gym I’m so exhausted that I can barely lift my arms to the steering wheel, but that’s about it.

So I think about it. And then I realize that I haven’t needed a nap once this week. It’s not as if time always allows for such a luxury, but there’s always that need (the one between 2 and 4 p.m. where time drags to no end, like I said). But this week, I haven’t been tired. In fact, I’ve felt pretty lively. There’s a little spring in my step, and I can’t give all the credit to the weather.

I think it’s a combination of a balanced diet and exercise. (Not to mention my caffeine intake has taken a serious hit.) I feel more regular. I get to eat when I’m hungry, and when I’m thirsty, the only thing I really crave is water. Isn’t that’s the way it should be? It feels good to rely on something so natural.

And at the end of the day, all of this non-drowsiness makes for some sound sleeping. Take it from the insomniac, herself.

So, at the end of Week Two I have:

  • Gained 1.2 pounds overall (.4 lb. increase since last week)
  • Lost .9% body fat overall (a .4% increase since last week)
  • Decreased my fat mass by .65 pounds overall (a .23 lb. improvement since last week)
  • Increased my lean mass by .82 pounds overall (a .03 lb. improvement since last week)

I’ve also decreased my drowsiness by 150 percent.

You can bet your bottom dollar that we put on our Annie faces on a Halloween occasion or two. Who didn’t grow up with big dreams of “Tomorrow,” if not Daddy Warbucks?

As adults, we could all learn a thing or two from America’s favorite eternal optimist and her four-legged sidekick. That’s why it’s fun to see the plucky, red-dressed, red-haired heartthrob take the stage once again. We’ve always been there to cheer Annie on, whether she’s giving Miss Hannigan the old one-two punch or weathering the hardknocks of life. We wouldn’t skip out on her now.

annie3.jpg

You can join Annie, Sandy, Daddy Warbucks and even Miss Hannigan, if you dare, beginning April 8 at Kingsbury Hall, presented by Broadway Across America. It will be just like the old days: same red dress, same red curls, same original, award-winning score. Maybe we’ll catch you singing along. (You know you wanna.)

New Space Entertainment is bringing “Annie” to town, and wants to treat two different YHO readers to a family four-pack of tickets on opening night. The tickets are reserved for the evening show on Tuesday, April 8. So comment away (one per reader). The “lines” will be open until 10 p.m. on Friday, March 28! We’ll announce our two winners (each getting four tickets) on Saturday morning.

Hagermann’s Bakehouse Cafe

Monday, March 24th, 2008
hagermanns1.jpg

How come we’re the last to hear about Hagermann’s? We crawled out of our caves this afternoon and visited the locally-owned eatery during lunch hour and we’re pretty sure all of Sandy and Draper were there, picking out tasty treats for lunch.

In this light, it’s kind of fitting that all-accommodating Hagermann’s is called a bakehouse as opposed to a bakery. Not only does it offer homemade breads and treats (brownies, cinnamon rolls, sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies), it also makes some of the best sandwiches this side of the Great Salt Lake, if not the Mississippi.

Ask the friendly guy at the counter. He’ll tell you Hagermann’s has the best sandwiches in the solar system. Take a bite, and you’ll find that it’s hard to dispute such a claim. Forget the Milky Way, these are the kinds of sandwiches you take trips to New York City for. (You say you don’t like jalapeno jelly, but just wait til your tastebuds get ahold of Hagermann’s.)

hagermanns2.jpg

We tried the Turkey Pomodoro and were immediately impressed with the flavor and quality of ingredients. This crowd favorite includes fresh roast turkey breast, havarti cheese, lettuce, slow-roasted tomatoes, cucumber and cranberry jalapeno jelly on Hagermann’s authentic Italian Peasant Loaf ($6.69 half, $8.69 whole). The tomato bisque is dee-lish, as are the generously-decorated sugar cookies with their almond flavoring. You can see what else is on the menu here.

A note to “Mr. Hagermann”: Salt Lake City is ready and waiting for you. We recommend a second location in Sugar House or Millcreek, or even downtown.

Week 1: Gain to Lose

Friday, March 21st, 2008
totallyfitv2.gif

You’ve heard of things getting worse before they can get better. In my case, things sound worse, even though they’re looking better.

The first week of my THF program has come and gone, and that cruel little hand on the scale bounced a little higher than it had for my initial “weigh-in.” The scale tells us I’ve gained .8 lbs., which my consultant Mike assures me is solid muscle that will help carry me toward my ultimate get-fit goal. (I can handle that. I’ve never been too scale-oriented, anyway. Neither is THF.)

The hardest parts so far? Swallowing my seemingly-massive breakfast and following up with frequent-enough meals throughout the day. Going without candy … though sugar-free Jolly Ranchers aren’t bad. Getting used to protein shakes. And that part of my consultation where I have to bend to the right and have the cushion around my midsection pinched to test my body fat percentage.

The good news? This week the pinch told me my body fat percentage has gone down by .4 percent in just seven days. And I’m going to remember that next time I’m wearing myself out on the leg press machine.

So, at the end of Week One I have:

  • Gained .8 lbs.
  • Lost .4% body fat
  • Decreased my fat mass by .22 lbs. (fat mass = all the fat deposits in our bodies)
  • Increased my lean mass by 1.02 lbs. (lean mass = everything else including muscle)

Wish me luck with Week Two!

Artichokes & Co.

artichokes1.jpg

Ever wondered where you can get stylish dishes, stylish soaps, stylish flower arrangements, and even stylish cheeses, all in one swoop?

Sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t. You’ll find all these lovelies (cheese included) and more at Artichokes & Co., seated in a cool structure on 1100 East with also-stylish Lunatic Fringe. We like to swoop by Artichokes whether we’re headed to a baby shower, a birthday dinner or a bridal luncheon, so we can grab something like Lorina lemonade or a Voluspa candle. (And if we need a little hair-styling, it’s just a staircase away.)

artichokes2.jpg
artichokes3.jpg

Here’s a quick prep: You’ll see tabletops covered in everything from Papaya stationery to candy-filled paint cans; a vintage bathtub spewing with supersoft robes by Barefoot Dreams and Elizabeth W bath products; as well as shelves stocked with culinary treats like Barefoot Contessa mixes and O Olive Oils.

Some of our favorite things include four city-themed “bon voyage” mugs with European scenery decorating them, bath salts by Watermarket, and a handful of luxury PJs. We also cooed over a collection of dishes covered in bright red polka dots.

Also special? Artickokes’ flower arrangements—we especially like the ones that incorporate their namesake: unexpected and stylish artichokes.

Feeling Green

Monday, March 17th, 2008
green.gif

Like most of you, we’re feeling a little green at Your Heart Out today. As you’re probably well-aware, it isn’t the first time. Last year on March 17 we displayed some of hip green-colored fashions, and last February we told you about of favorite local green-titled vintage shop.

Like Barneys and its over-the-top holiday windows, we’ve turned on to the earth-friendly kind of green. We dished about our favorite environmentally-friendly online boutique, as well as a local eco-chic building center. Plus, we spilled some cool options for green shopping bags.

Today, we’ll be spewing off a few more greenies. Hip hip hurray for these favorite green things, which you should definitely check out:

Have any green favorites you wanna share? Let us know in the comments. And a happy St. Patrick’s Day to you.
