Art Inside, Utah
What used to be the Boutique on Brentwood is now a fab affair called Art Inside. Has a nice ring, don’t you think? It also has a nice variety of goodies from local crafties like kids aprons, handbags, jewelry, photography, felted soaps—even hand-dyed yarns this year (2008 marks its fourth appearance). The affair goes down this weekend—Saturday only—from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Time to get your gift-shopping on. Or just socialize and wander the garden, which sounds pretty good right about now.

Jacket Weather

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

We’re finally liking the looks of the five-day forecast. Wethinks it’s fair to say that jacket weather has officially arrived—throw a cropped mini-coat over your favorite tee, or let the hem of your trench meet the hem of your knee-length sundress.

Here’s a handful of our current faves. Looks like poppy is the color for spring, but we like that subtle metallic tone too.

J Dawgs

Monday, April 28th, 2008

J Dawgs, Provo, Utah

There are times and places for hot dogs. Like the first seasonal family barbecue. Or the corner of Prince and Broadway after a shopping binge in Soho. Baseball games aren’t the same without them; neither are camping trips.

Also appropriate: the first sunny days of spring. There’s something about a hot dog that screams warm weather and sunny skies. If you’re in a hot dog kind-of-mood, it’s usually a good omen in terms of weather. And if you’re a hot dog kind-of-person (or even if you’re not) word on the street is you’ve got to try J Dawgs.

The traffic this little dog stand generates on the streets of Provo has other college eateries green with envy. Coeds line up on weekday afternoons and weekends alike for a bite. You can get a Polish (which we recommend) or a beef hot dog for $2.75. Add a drink, and you’re up to $3.50.
J Dawgs, Provo, Utah

Toppings that set J Dawgs apart from the rest include their special sauce (a sweet southern barbecue) as well as onions, pickles, banana peppers, sauerkraut and jalapenos. And their buns are baked fresh daily at a local bakery. As for the dogs themselves, they’re crosscut and “grilled to perfection.”

Plus, the J Dawg (Jayson) keeps Apple Beer and pink lemonade on tap—also good for the dawg days of summer.

Week Six: Getting My Education

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

total health & fitness

For the last six weeks I’ve been on a fitness regimen provided by Total Health and Fitness. Although the physical changes aren’t immediately obvious (I joined for fitness purposes rather than weight loss), I’m feeling waaay better than I used to. I needed to get in shape. I needed fitness education.

And an education is what I’ve been getting. THF’s program hasn’t asked too much of me. Though I’ve cut down on sweets, treats and the tri-weekly Mt. Dew—a move I’ve been needing to make for years—I’ve learned to point myself in the direction of things I like that also happen to be good for me.

I enjoy sweetened oatmeal and fresh strawberries in the morning, I get to have guacamole with my southwestern-style salads (complete with rice and beans and some dressing), and marinated artichoke hearts top off my whole wheat pita. Plus, my Diet Cokes come packed with limes and I can have a late-night snack of sugar-free pudding. And none of this will get me in trouble with Mike, my consultant. I only get in trouble if I allow myself to get hungry.

Now that I know what to eat (and when), I’ve also learned how to use 80% of the machines at my gym. The intimidation I felt upon entering the weightroom with its once-scary machinery is a thing of the past. I daresay I’ve perfected my lifting technique. I even think I could teach the meatheads a thing or two.

At the end of week six, I have:

  • Lost .6 pounds
  • Lost 3.7% body fat
  • Decreased my fat mass by 3.89 pounds
  • Increased my lean mass by 3.29 pounds

Just two weeks to go. But I’m not worried about when it’s over. As they say, education is something you get to take with you.

Picnics and Baskets

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

The coast isn’t quite clear (snow again?), but that doesn’t mean we can’t cheer ourselves up with thoughts of spring-to-summer picnics. In the mountains. At the park. In the garden. For the outdoor concert.

picnic basket

These are just a few of our favorites picnic baskets, found online. Some offer the classic weaved boxy basket, while others include carriers that keep your drinks cool and glasses that won’t break. And salt and pepper shakers. They thought of ev-uh-ry-thing.

Pictured (clockwise from top left): Martha Stewart Collection Picnic Basket, Picnic Basket With Liner, Persimmon Picnic Set, Tapered Rattan Picnic Set, Safari Picnic Backpack (also available locally at OC Tanner), Banana Leaf Picnic Basket.

Where are your favorite local picnic spots? Share your ideas below. Then we can compile a list for quick-reference.

Abode

abode, salt lake city, utah

What do you do when you like to collect and antique so much that the door on your storage unit won’t close, thanks to a few too many vintage chairs and antique dressers? You open up an eclectic consignment boutique so that others can browse and purchase your your treasured collectibles, of course. It’s more fun that way, anyway.

A scenario along those lines brought about Salt Lake’s Abode. The bright turquoise box-of-a-building on 900 East is filled (almost to the brim) with colorful items from yesteryear, both found and consigned. Alongside vintage aprons, dishes and serving trays that will brighten any living quarters, you’ll see antique hutches, retro lamps and mirrors fit for your grandmother’s parlor … and now yours.

abode, salt lake city, utah

Ask any interior decorator and he’ll tell you that while filling your house with fresh, modern pieces is a must, it’s the few conversation-worthy pieces that will morph yours walls into a home. It could be the bright yellow cuckoo clock that greets visitors in the entryway, or the unusual collection of salt-and-pepper shakers decorating the top of your console.

Though not quite as thrifty as the thrift store—not to mention the garage sale or your grandmother’s linen closet—Abode offers a serious handful of vintage doodads fit for making your home interesting. You might have to look high and low until you see the one item (a teacup? a spoon? a skeleton key?) that speaks to your heart, but when you find it, you’ll know.

Abode also hosts flea markets in their parking lot on summer Saturdays beginning May 3. If you’re interested in becoming a vendor, visit the Abode website.

Week Five: Trade Off

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

totallyfitv2.gif

This post caps the fifth week of my fitness plan with Total Health and Fitness. For the first time in months (or five weeks), I’m really starting to feel different. I think if you poked my side, it would feel a little tougher. Or if you grabbed my bicep, you would actually detect a muscle there. Maybe even a tricep, which is new to me.

No, my jeans aren’t loose around the waist and my shirts aren’t getting too big for me. From the beginning, my weight has pretty much stayed the same which is what I wanted. But as far as that late-20s tune-up is concerned, things are going smoothly. I’m pretty impressed with the results.

Check out these stats, marking the end of week five:

  • Gained .2 pounds overall (a 1.2 lb. increase since last week)
  • Lost 3.3% body fat overall (a 1.2% increase since last week)
  • Decreased my fat mass by 3.33 pounds overall (a .97 lb. improvement since last week)
  • Increased my lean mass by 3.53 pounds overall (a 2.17 lb. improvement since last week)

Basically, I’ve traded in 3.3 pounds of fat for 3.5 pounds of muscle. A sound trade off, don’t you think? And all without a major change in lifestyle or any sketchy dietary choices. I’m feeling pretty good about my return-on-investment. My numbers are working for me.

Napkins were made for wiping your mouth and preventing water rings, not passing on your contact info. Ick. Who wants to tuck that old thang in their purse or coatpocket?

Next time you’re at lunch and run into a friend of a friend who know this guy who knows this girl that’s an up-and-comer in the business you wanna be in, don’t even think of reaching for the napkin. You’re a class act, and you know better.

Instead, make an impression and pass along your digits and ‘dresses with these cool letterpressed business cards from Salt Lake’s own Mandate Press. These hip cards come in six customizable designs and are printed on true white durable 110-lb. paper (the kind with the rough texture you like to run your fingers over) in statement-making black ink.

Super sleuths will swoon over the super sleek Secret Agent. Or you might try unleashing your inner superstar (on paper) with the Rockstar. You can keep it cheery with the ironically-named Femme Fatale, or make more mateys with our favorite, the Pirate. You can see all six designs from the Mandate Press here.

A run of 250 cards will cost you less than $100, and custom jobs are available via this link. Rather than plug your digits into her cellie or Berry, your gal might opt to pin your card on the walls of cubicle. Or maybe even hang it on her fridge. And that’s just where you want to be.
