Moochie’s Meatballs

moochie's meatballs

Everyone (save a few vegetarians) appreciates a good meatball. Robbie Hart took it so far as to let an old woman pay him with meatballs. If the meatballs came from Moochie’s, we might consider doing the same.

Though it calls itself a place for “fresh Italian takeout,” Moochie’s Meatballs and More doesn’t dish up your average Italian fare. (What place with a pottery shop built-in does?) It may offer a menu thick with parmigianas and scallopinis, but you don’t go visit this little dive for authenticity so much as signature sandwiches.

Moochie’s is practically famous for its meatball sandwich, and its not-necessarily-Italian Philly cheesesteak is equally popular. It’s the kind people rant and rave about—just glance through the local papers, or ask Guy Fieri. The meaty meatball ($5.50 for a 6-inch) comes with sweet sauce and a healthy topping of mozzarella cheese. The cheesesteak ($5 for a 6-inch) is made with grilled onions and peppers and an even healthier dose of melted American cheese.

moochie's meatballs

What we love about Moochie’s, aside from the perfectly-concocted buns: a fridge stocked with canned and bottled sodas; Moochie’s infamous jalapeno sauce; a condiment bar complete with three kinds of pickled bell peppers; the local color apparent in atmosphere and patrons; and Gramma’s Bread Pudding—-a handed-down family recipe. We also love that when we eat here, we feel like part of the city, as if we’re partaking in some local secret.

Like that old lady in the Alka Seltzer commercials, Moochie’s will have you saying “Mamma Mia!” The pottery from the shop that shares its walls might not do the same, but somehow, the oddity of it all ends up being part of the appeal.

oneity madagascar fundraiser

If you don’t already know about ONEiTY, then you gotsta read this post. Not only does this local company craft super-cute and classy apparel for kiddos, it’s centered on creating jobs for women in third-world countries and replanting revenue in communities where its clothings is manufactured.

In a nutshell: when you shop with them, you feel all warm and fuzzy. And you get cute stuff.

Recently, a small workshop in Madagascar that produces ONEiTY’s merch was robbed. These people lost their computer, their sewing equipment, their cash … everything. Recovering from a loss like this around here would be rough, but you can probably imagine the obstacle it creates in a place like Madagascar.

oneity madagascar fundraiser

In an effort to get their friends back on their feet, ONEiTY is hosting a generous three-day fundraiser this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. When you shop with ONEiTY on these three days, every single dollar you spend will be sent directly to Madagascar. Every. Single. Dollar.

On top of that, every shopper to make a purchase online and in-store will be entered to win a drawing for sweet prizes like prints from Sarah Jane Studios and Fall Down Tree; customized alphabet blocks from Hiccup Inc., cupcakes from So Cupcake, and, get this:

A YEAR of free clothing from ONEiTY! Woowza.

Obviously, you don’t want to miss out. Head to the store tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday to help them help their friends. You’ll feel good, and your kids will look good because of it.

Maddie wrote in to see if YHO knows of a place where new modern/contemporary furniture can be purchased locally, and quite reasonably. (And we’re not talkin’ IKEA, here.)

Here are a few favorite haunts, off the tops of our heads:

Copenhagen West: You’ll see prices all over the place, but we’ve spied some sleek platform beds and dining chairs that were within reach. 5410 S. 900 East, Salt Lake City.

Lofgrens: Prices here aren’t too outlandish, and there is usually an eye-catching selection of chairs and sofas on sale in the basement. 3690 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City.

Manhattan Loft: We thought it was gone but it isn’t! No longer holding its outpost on 700 East, Manhattan Loft is now located at 2358 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City but still carries the same modern-only inventory.

By Design: This local shop proves to be a good place to pick up a cool sofa or sexy office chair. They’ve moved from Highland Drive and are now located at 204 W. 2855 South, Salt Lake City.

DownEast Home: DownEast isn’t home to Pottery Barn’s hand-me-downs anymore. We’ve picked up pieces from West Elm and Crate and Barrel, and at a serious fraction of the cost at this warehouse-of-sorts. Never count DownEast out. Locations here.

Or you can try browsing Modern Materials online, and support a former local shop owner (the business is only online now, but maybe they have a local warehouse).

Anything else you would add to the list for Maddie?

Stomp, Salt Lake City

You’ve been known to throw stomping fits from time to time, but only when you don’t get your way. And you probably stomped through some serious mud puddles in your younger days. For all we know, you could be stompin’ the yard as we speak. Needless to say, stomping is something you think you have down-pat.

But maybe it’s time to we leave stomping to the professionals—like, say, an eight-person troupe that can make sweet rhythms not only with their feet, but with help from the likes of garbage cans and push brooms. Yes, these professional stompers exist and they’re coming your way.

Stomp, Salt Lake City

June 3 through 8, Capitol Theatre gets rowdy when Broadway Across America brings percussion sensation “STOMP” to Salt Lake City. The super-fun show, called everything from “explosive and sophisticated to utterly unique” isn’t your average chitty-chitty-bang-bang event. “STOMP” is all about making innovative noise and making noise innovative, whether the sounds are coming from a tea chest, plastic bag, plunger, or hubcap.

In a nutshell: you’ll see (or hear) everything but the kitchen sink. Maybe you’ll even sneak in a few stomps of your own.

chocolate carnivale

If there’s one thing Utah doesn’t have enough of (aside from direct flights overseas and In-n-Outs and Saks Off Fifth outlets), it’s definitely red carpet events. Especially red carpet events for young folks like us who want to get gussied up on occasion, but have nowhere to go in their favorite LBD and heels or three-button suit.

If there’s one more thing Utah doesn’t have enough of, it’s red carpet events centered all around one beloved thing: chocolate. Luckily for Salt Lake lads and lassies, the YWCA Chocolate Carnivale is here. Tomorrow from 7 – 10 p.m., the Carnivale honors three local ladies who are, to put it simply, under age 35 and working to make the world a better place. The highlight of the evening might be the bevy of chocolate treats from some of the city’s finest restaurants, as well as a silent auction for things like spa treatments and gift certificates to area boutiques.

At this “Celebration of Successful Young Women” cocktail attire is recommended, and guests should come prepared to have their photo taken with their BFFs or date.

But first, there’s one more thing that Utah doesn’t have enough of: red carpet events centered on chocolate, that also happen to be free of charge. Now you have no excuse: all dressed up, somewhere to go, and all budgetary restrictions just flew out the window.

Lucky you. Now, just smile for the camera.

Ruth’s Diner

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008
ruth's diner

On a whim, we headed up Emigration Canyon to Ruth’s Diner earlier this week. Eager to enjoy the sunny forecast and make a quick exit from our regular ‘hood with a pair of out-of-towners, Ruth’s was the perfect respite for our city-weary party of five.

Ruth’s is a place you visit just for the fun of it. You get a little anxious with excitement on the way there. It’s not that there’s that one menu item you absolutely die over, though there are a handful of excellent options (especially if you’re in a breakfast mood), but the diner has a certain pull for most locals. Maybe it’s the need to dine on a patio with canyon views, or to enjoy the nostalgic appeal of a classic diner structure. Whatever it is, Ruth’s is the place. It has a history most local eateries are devoid of, and which really compliments food your grandmother might have cooked.

ruth's diner

For starters, there are the mile-high biscuits, served with all the packaged butter you can handle and a jar of raspberry jam, like all comfort food should. You can follow them up with a nice dish of huevos rancheros ($7.49—breakfast served until 4 p.m.); a tasty Holy Smokes Pulled-Pork Sandwich ($7.49); or a This-Is-Almost-The-Place Burger ($7.99). There are also enchiladas, salads and pastas to choose from as well as a handful of vegetarian and vegan options.

ruth's diner

Ruth’s menu is said to be composed of passed-down family recipes. It’s nothing fancy, it’s just good. In a nutshell: you can take anyone there and get an authentic Utah experience—canyon and charm included. It’s appropriate for family dining, it’s great for dinner with friends, and it works well for date nights. As long as that night is in the summer. Ruth’s is best enjoyed with those perfect June, July and August evenings. Our old friend Ruth was on to something. You can even enjoy barbecue on the patio Thursday evenings this summer.

Baby Bintz

bab bintz

When it comes to cute stuff for babies, we can’t get enough around here. Whether or not you’re a Mom, certainly you have a sister, brother, cousin, BFF, coworker, neighbor, book clubber with a wee one on the way, if not already wrapped in their arms that you can spoil, err, shower with love.

Our next stop: Baby Bintz. This hub for baby accessories (and YHO sponsor!) keeps plenty of cute tokens on-hand. We’re huge fans of their soft-as-a-baby’s-behind toddler blankets (we like the monkey kind), as well as Baby Bintz’ still-soft and stylish burp cloths (like this). Also check out the crayon and coloring kits for kiddos.

Also click on the nicely packaged and put-together Bintz Baskets that make gift-giving a snap. You’ll even get to customize what goes inside.

YHO Dealio: Your Heart Out readers will get 15% off their next purchase when they enter coupon code “Heart” at checkout. This offer is good through May only so hurry up up up.

{Mini Doorprize} As if that wasn’t enough, Baby Bintz wants to hand out one burp cloth and one ribbon binkie clip to one oh-so-lucky YHO baby. Want these to dazzle the little one in your life? You’ll even get to pick which designs you want. Just leave one comment on this post before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. We’ll announce the winner on Thursday.
