Local Spotlight: Fox Paws Shoes

Monday, August 31st, 2009

foxpaws

Some people really know how to make good with their In-Laws. Take the team behind local startup Fox Paws Shoes, for example. Three local sisters-in-law put their brains together and whipped up this line of fun-size shoes for little ones ages 0 – 24 months—and they’re the kind big girls wouldn’t want to slide their toes in, too.

Started in Utah, Fox Paws’ signature animal-print loafers and peek-a-boo styles are the kinds moms swoon over. They’re made with style and comfort in mind, too, so your lad or lassie will like wearing them as much as you like seeing them … or holding them in the palm of your hand.

pioneer-park-marketPicture Show: The movie hasn’t been announced, but tomorrow marks your last chance to get your summer on at the Pioneer Picture Show and Craft Market. You can peruse local-made gifts from 6 – 9 p.m., and watch a filmed-in-Utah flick at dusk. Details here.

In Mmmusic: As for tunes this week, you can listen in on Robert Randolph and the Family Band with Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears tonight at the Gallivan Center. Or, try Band of Annuals next week at Urban Lounge or Modest Mouse at In the Venue. More info via Lacey’s Music Guide.

decadesRecently: Anne Christensen of the New York Times blog dished about Salt Lake City’s Decades vintage clothing store on State Street earlier this month. We’ve always soaked in their uncanny shoe/boot collection, but Anne scored a Gucci blouse. Jealous. Read the post here.

On Broadway: Films taking the big screen at the Broadway Theater this week include “Paper Heart,” “Adam,” “500 Days of Summer,” and “Food, Inc.,” to name a few. Why Broadway? Two words: San Pellegrino Limonata. And they’ll deliver your food to you mid-movie, if necessary. Show times here.

Rarely do you come across the words “approachable” and “gourmet” in the same sentence, but after dining at Salt Lake’s Eva, we’re happy to see that these words are finally getting acquainted. This chic-meets-homey Mediterranean eatery nestled in the heart of the city serves up high quality, simple fare at truly affordable prices.

Every dish at Eva falls into one of three categories: pizza ($7.95), pasta ($9.95), and small plates ($3 – $9). There are many classic variations on basics, like three cheese pizza and pasta carbonara, and even more interesting options for more adventurous eaters. (Rabbit pappardelle pasta, anyone? Any takers for pizza with octopus?) And with realistic price tags, even exotic combinations come off as playful rather than intimidating.

eva-2

You might want to start out with the Brussel sprouts plate: sliced sprouts sauteed with cider vinegar and toasted hazelnuts. This combination gives off just the right amount of tang to justly offset the dish’s otherwise toasty flavor. The parmesan, garlic and rosemary fries also proved delicious.

Order a white pizza, and it will come expertly fired with a crispy/chewy crust, topped with chicken, artichokes and mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. Even the baked Greek macaroni with sweet peppers and feta is complete with flakey, phyllo pastry on top. You’ll be back now and later. But don’t take our words for it.

Who says the cleaning has to be left to spring? This fall, do your closet right and give it a good, old fashioned detox. You’ve held on to those Leboutins hoping your tootsies might shrink with age. We too are guilty of picking up one too many DVF frocks when the price tag matched our budget (rather than our true size).

So, let’s clean house. Time to say goodbye. At a Designer Consigner Consignment Sale taking place September 4 and 5 in Salt Lake City, you can trade in your unloved designer duds and turn a profit. Get the skinny here, check out the list of brands here, give your closet a good examination, and take your pieces to the Spa Vitoria (5445 S. Highland Drive) on September 1. You’ve got more than a week to make it happen.

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Yes, sirs and madams. We know we deserve a slap on the wrist and a good dose of the What-For from Ms. Pimpleton, our resident Hall Monitor, regarding our recent truancies. We do have a good excuse, though—a big ol’ bout with a little appendix that left our MacBooks unloved and our blog very neglected. Boo hoo.

We promise to be back next week, as long as we can get a hall pass. Hopefully we’ll get by on charm. We’ve missed you.

Sampled: Dasks Greek Grill

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

By Ali Anderson Smith

dasks

Sampled: Grilled chicken salad and hummus, take-out style, near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Where: Dasks Greek Grill (6522 S. Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, Holladay)

High & Low: The only thing better than the perfectly-concocted hummus and pita combo at this small eatery might be the three slices of  grilled chicken sitting atop their grilled chicken salad. The hummus is finger-lickin’ good; the pita is soft and filling—and there’s enough for a party of three. Pair it with a salad, and you’ve got yourself a hearty, balanced lunch on the go. Though the lettuce could be a tad crisper, it’s made up for with ripe (not pink) tomatoes, fresh Feta, tasty olives and tangy dressing. With dishes this good, you might want to stop by before and after your hike.

How much: Grilled Chicken Salad, $7.25 for small; hummus, $5.29

It’s that time again. We think you guys tend to have all the ideas. So share them below. It’s your turn to get word out about what’s going on in the next week!

Local Spotlight: Rose and the Bald-Headed Elephant

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

roseelephantLet’s face it. We all have body issues. We feel too short or too tall, we think our nose is too long or too snub, we fear we look fat in those jeans. Well, the bald-headed elephant is no exception. This self-conscious pachyderm agonizes over his gleaming pate. Lucky for Mr. Elephant, he has a dear friend who won’t let his insecurities get the best of him.

In this endearing children’s book by local Wooley Cottswold, Rose tries to help Mr. Elephant past his self-consciousness by showing him all the wonderful things she sees in him. We all need a friend like Rose: someone to bring us up when we’re down—and talk us down from getting a toupee. A self-proclaimed doodler, Cottswold brings an unexpected freshness and whimsy to his illustrations, which makes the book all the more charming.

“Rose and the Bald-Headed Elephant” is available locally at Hip & Humble, The King’s English, Babinski’s Baby, The Children’s Hour and Frost’s Books, and a reading is slated for September 12 at The King’s English.

{Doorprize} Check out this book, on the house. Want your kiddo to make friends with Rose and her Elephant? Leave just one comment on this post before midnight tonight, August 12.

Most days, we’re happy with our little spot on the map. But today, we wouldn’t mind changing addresses for one a tad north of here. Why the wanderlust? Think See Kai Run baby shoes, Petunia Picklebottom bags and handfuls of Melissa & Doug toys all under one charming roof on a historic, walkable street. The kind of little shop that will have you coming back again and again. Even commuting for.

little-cherry-blossoms-2

Nestled among award-winning Ume clothing boutique and the ever-popular Needle Point Joint on Ogden’s more-charming-than-ever Historic 25th Street, Little Cherry Blossoms is giving moms (and many baby shower attendees) something to shout about. A haven for baby shopping, this boutique is known for scouting out the lastest and greatest in the kiddo community.

Let your registry get more sophisticated than the Babies ‘R Us route, and give this shop a try. Your shower guests will get all the hand-holding they need, plus they have the really cute ‘n necessary stuff you really want like lightweight Aiden & Anais blankets, Trumpette socks and the softest pima cotton convertible gowns from Kissy Kissy.

What’s that you say? You don’t live in Weber or even Davis County and you’re not much for driving? Then hop over to Little Cherry Blossoms online, where you’ll find the same cute stuff,  and be taken care of just as nicely.

As for those of you calling Ogden home, we’re sorry if we’re not our regular selves next time we see you. Just like those girls in middle school, we’re just jealous.
