Check It Out

gallerystroll.gifStroll It Out: Friday means it’s time for the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll. If the weather holds out, it could be one of the most enjoyable. Hurrah for jacket weather! The roster is looking good; see for yourself here.

L’Eggs and L’Easter: Lookin’ for a good egg hunt or Easter what-have-you for the kiddos? Try Wheeler Farm’s free egg hunt at 9 a.m. on Saturday; the Gateway shopping center’s Easter Bonnet Parade from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday; and/or the end-all be-all of Easter activities at Thanksgiving Point’s Easter Eggstreme where you can paint eggs, hunt for eggs, participate in crafts … even get a pony ride on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

valet.jpgValet, Please: If you’ve had a bugger of a time trying to park at Ninth and Ninth, we’ve got good news. Beloved merchants like Floribunda and The Children’s Hour are offering a valet service for their patrons. The service is available from the front of Studio 9, and the two aforementioned stores. These guys have class.

In Mmmusic: Listen in on Beach House with the Papercuts on Friday at Kilby Court, and Jose Gonzales on Saturday at the U of U Ballroom. Or find something that suits you via Lacey’s Music Guide.

bigscarf.jpgDancing Machines: Rev those engines. Remember this fun event from last year? They’re bringing it back. RDT’s Community Open House will be held on Saturday, March 29. Mark your calendars, and get more info here.

I wonder what is up with the whole parking shenanigans at 9th and 9th. All the angry marker signs in business windows are amusing…

The people who own the parking lot are terrible neighbors – they plowed their lot every time it snowed, but never once did they clean up the east sidewalk. Because of this, we had to walk through the lot to get to 9th and 9th, which was filled with hidden, shoe-soaking slush puddles and has the pleasant feature of forcing pedestrians to walk through a blind corner into the traffic of vehicles entering the lot.

The owner of the lot does a good job of hiding – my multiple calls to the city resulted in exactly zero enforcement of the shoveling law, as the ticketing agents couldn’t figure out who to give the ticket to. Local businesses could help with this, but didn’t seem willing to do so this winter.

If the businesses on this block truly want to improve access, not only will they implement valet service, but they will help their neighbors and the people who choose to walk to their stores get to the stores safely, they will ask their parking lot neighbor to clean up the garbage in his lot (I do it several times a week on my way to coffee) and to shovel his east sidewalk so that the people who choose to park for free on Lincoln can access their businesses without having to negotiate traffic, deep snow and ice. I have slipped several times on this sidewalk, and have seen other people fall, too.

Many of the people who want to visit 9th and 9th park on the side streets. As a neighbor and homeowner, I have no problem with this, and consider the crowded streets part of living in a pseudo-urban environment. The constant stream of people with yoga mats is in no way harming my ability to enjoy my home. As long as the businesses on 9th and 9th are reasonably respectful of what we do as neighbors to accommodate their needs (ie. please, try to not valet onto the really narrow streets, like Lincoln, as it is hard to get in and out of our driveways when the street is full of cars, which it already is on evenings and weekends), we will continue to support their need to accommodate patrons and not move to request permit only parking.

I really like 9th and 9th and want it to grow. If you all know of anyone that wants to open a branch of the Bayou here, that would be appreciated, too. Especially if it had a patio for summer :-).

Oh, and maybe someone could get Mutual Beauty and Continental Cleaners to fix their signs? I thought Mutual was out of business for the first year I lived here.

Another great party is at the Young Living Lavender Farm in Mona, Utah–that is just south of Utah County. My favorite part about it is the on-going egg hunt. You take a wagon ride out to the egg field and when your basket is full you are done…that means you don’t have to worry about your little one getting clobbered by older kids (or over-eager parents). And if you miss the start of the hunt you aren’t out of luck! (Ok, so I work for the farm, but it really is a fabulous event!)

And I can’t not mention these other activities:
    Pony Rides
    Paddle Boats
    Bunny Hop
    Seed Planting
    Petting Zoo
    Rock Climbing Wall
    Fishing Wall
    And More!

Anyway–enough rambling! More info at younglivingfarms.com.
