Dedicated: Sonora Grill
It’s not every day you’d find us making the jaunt from Salt Lake to Ogden to sample the local fare. But when the crew from three-month-old Sonora Grill gave us the challenge, we happily obliged … after perusing the menu, of course.
Sonora Grill is an authentic Mexican restaurant shacking up in Ogden that aims to put a contemporary twist on old-time favorites like chilaquiles and doraditos. (Yes, it’s true there’s more to the south-of-the-border menu than just burritos and tacos.)

For starters, Sonora Grill is all about the starters. Begin with an agua fresca—-a perfect-for-summer drink that blends exotic fruit juices like grapefruit and ginger. Ours was guava lemonade and we could have downed five. Then try a healthy portion of guacamole mixed right before your eyes, and any number of three salsas to dip your chips in: red from smoked morita chiles, green from tomatillos, or habanero for the very brave. The tomatillo salsa was some of the best we’ve laid tastebuds on.
The same goes for the ceviche—which we like to think of as the Mexican version of sushi, and couldn’t get enough of. We got a trio sampler (a good deal at $15.95) and opted for the ahi tuna (thinly-sliced tuna in ginger-lime and habanero chile sauces); coconut scallops (whole bay scallops in coconut milk and lime); and a chef’s special: marlin with cucumbers and pickled poblano peppers.

You could stop there: just head to the Grill for really good drinks, fresh guacamole, savory salsas, and awesome ceviche for a quick bite with friends. But you should try more. The menu was drawn up on a trip to Mexico and the executive chef has an impressive resume, after all. And if that wasn’t enough, the presentation alone is worth seeing.
We took it easy with a taco sampler (one coconut shrimp, one salmon, one carne asada and one al pastor.) We then moved on to the chilaquiles with grilled chicken, which consists of tortillas, Mexican cheeses, tomatillo salsa, and chayote-jicama salad. Both got an “Aaaamen.”

But you could also try the grilled corn on the cob or fresh fruit salsa. Obviously, we can’t say enough so you’ll have to try it for yourself. Start with the agua fresca and a glance through the menu. We’ll be headed back to this Ogden eatery, with our families in-tow, eager to show off this latest discovery.

I am so excited to go here. The fact that I love Mexican food is only part of it–my grandma and her parents owned a Japanese restaurant on this street for over 60 years before she retired. I’m so glad to see that another great restaurant has found its way to Kiesel Ave!
July 8th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Yum. I could go for some good guacamole!

July 8th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Let’s see if I love food enough to will myself to win this…
July 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
I was excited to hear that the Sonora Grill serves authentic Mexican cuisine. My husband’s grandmother cooks authentic Mexican food and I have heard all about how wonderful it is since we got married, almost 13 yrs ago. I love to cook and have tried several times to prepare culinary masterpieces to appease him, but I seem to always fall short. His grandmother is elderly and doesn’t really cook much anymore and I know he misses it. I have had the privilege of eating her food a couple times and it has been wonderful. I would love to take him to the Sonora Grill to sample your menu, it sounds exquisite. If it is half as good as what people are saying, I think he will love me forever!
July 8th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Yea for Davis County! I am always in the mood for Mexican!
July 8th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Ever since we talked about this on Thursday, I’ve been thinking I want to drive up to Ogden to try it out!
July 8th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
After reading this, I’m craving Mexican food. Thanks, YHO, you’ve convinced me to stop in Ogden next time I’m passing through (which will probably to tonight, just to sample Sonora)
July 8th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
The food looks AMAZING!! I”m a big fan of Mexican food and I’m always looking for a new place to try. I’ll make my way to Ogden with or without the giftcard, but it would be so much better with giftcard in hand.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
I’m always on the lookout for good food in Ogden…it seems to be quite a rarity! After living and working my whole life in Salt Lake, I got a job in Ogden (which is in Weber County, by the way, Amber) and have had some withdrawals from abundant good food. A $50 gift card, and a good referral, would be just the ticket.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I would love to come try Sonora Grill! I happen to be coming to Ogden next month! I am always looking for good Mexican food.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

July 10th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
I would love to visit your restaurant. My husband lived in California for a little while and he claims that he has never eaten at any Mexican restaurant in Utah that is as good as what he had while living in California. I would love for him to find a Mexican restaurant that he “loves”. We have eaten at many places in Utah and he has never found the taste he is looking for. We would love to try your restaurant!
July 10th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Oh my gosh!!!! My mouth is watering!!! I am so hungry!!!
July 10th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
i’ve been eyeing this place… $50 gift card or not, i’m there.
July 11th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Oh wow…looks like heaven. I can’t wait to try it.
July 11th, 2008 at 9:30 am
That food looks AMAZING! My husband and I love authentic Mexican food and we love trying new restaurants. We live in SLC and the best place for authentic Mexican food we have found in Utah is the Red Iguana. After seeing your website though we will defiantly have to plan a trip up to Ogden. In fact my husbands birthday is on July 20th and that $50 gift card would be by far the perfect gift. We were planning a trip to Argentina for his birthday because he served a mission there but then he lost his job and that being said, we can’t do the trip right now. But all he has been asking for is to go to a Taco stand and have unlimited tacos for his birthday. Weird, I know. Anyways, we would love to experience your fabulous restaurant and the $50 gift card would just be icing on the cake.

Finally – a mexican restaurant in the area that serves some good chilaquiles – one of my favorite dishes. Plus, tableside guacamole is one of my favorites parts of our trips to Mexico. I’m glad to see someone doing it stateside. I think we’ll coming back often.
