October Music Guide
By Lacey Jane Pappas

Last month, we were overly spoiled with the number of talented acts passing through Salt Lake City. This month, we’re just as lucky. Here are my picks for must-see live music for October:
We highlighted Fleet Foxes when they were scheduled to play in July. Unfortunately, they canceled the show when they began touring with Wilco. Have no fear, you still have a chance to catch up with them. Fleet Foxes will be the headlining band on October 16 at In the Venue. With flawless harmonies and spot-on timing, this new “it” band has got their act together.

If you’re quick to fall for a heavenly voice, you’ll soon be tripping all over Jolie Holland. A founding member of the Be Good Tanyas and Shortlist Music winner, Jolie’s already-accomplished musical career is still taking off. Her folk release debuting this month, “The Living and the Dead,” has untried melodies that are music to your ears. See ‘em come alive on October 22 at the Urban Lounge.
Listen here. Suggested track: “Love Henry”
So folk isn’t your thing. How about an evening with Asobi Seksu? This band experiments with layers of mellow-meets-pop sounds guided by lead singer Yuki Chikudate. The Japanese/English group is holding on to the success they garnered from “Citrus,” a release warmly accepted on college radio stations and around the Internet. See how they blend live on October 25 at Kilby Court.
Listen here. Suggested track: “Stay Awake”
Finally, Ray LaMontagne’s live show comes to the Murray Theater on October 28. We’ve heard fantastic things about his live show; his passion for music is evident in his voice—like Van Morrison and Jeff Buckley, raspy and warm. With a little jazz and bluesy flair, you can’t help but feel good humming along.
