November Music Guide

You can get your live music fill this month, and still leave plenty of room for turkey….

stephen-malkmus.jpgFirst up, it’s the man himself. Stephen Malkmus plays with the Jicks on November 8 at Urban Lounge. Genius musician Malkmus, of Pavement fame, began his solo gig in 1999 and lucky for us, he’s still going strong. As for the Jicks, who will be playing backup, this band includes former members of Elastica and Sleater-Kinney. It doesn’t get much better than that, if you catch them live.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Dragonfly Pie”

rachael-yamagata.jpgWhere can you see Rachael Yamagata, Thao Nguyen and Meiko in one night? Make it one for the ladies at the Avalon Theater on November 12. The Hotel Cafe Tour features a handful of headlining bands that know how to jam. In its fourth year, the lineup includes the above-mentioned crooners as well as Kate Havnevik, Lenka and Emily Wells. Preview their voices here. Trust me, this isn’t your average Lilith Fair. And men, you’re invited too.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Beat” by Thao Nguyen

bishop-allen.jpgBishop Allen‘s “The Broken String” easily made my list of favorite albums in 2007. Before Vampire Weekend made it big, these also-Brooklyners were ahead of the game with “Charm School” under their belt. With light, string-infused melodies, this quartet carries their tunes with appealing lyrics and awesome crescendos (see “Flight 180″). Check them out on November 14 at Kilby Court.

Listen here. Suggested track: “Click Click Click Click”

of-montreal.jpgOf Montreal is currently out in support of their recent release, “Skeletal Lamping.” This eccentric band brings a refreshing take on pop by fusing old and new school. You’ll hear harpsichord combined with synthesized beats, topped with fanciful lyrics. Lead by vocalist Kevin Barnes, you’ll be in for a treat at their live show. (He’s known for provocative performances.) See for yourself at Murray Theater on November 17.

Listen here. Suggested track: “An Eluardian Instance”

Also, be sure not to miss Mason Jennings on November 20 or thee band of the year, Coldplay, on November 22.

And mark your calendars: sultry singer Adele is visiting on January 23.
