July Music Guide

Summer is definitely heating up now that we have a handful of free shows to look forward to with the Twilight Concert Series. The SLC Arts Council did a fantasic job in booking this lineup. Here’s the 411:
The Twilight Concert Series are free shows at the Gallivan Center each Thursday evening, beginning July 9 through August 27. If you’ve been to one of these shows, you already know that it gets extremely crowded. So if you’re a serious fan, plan on getting there early to score a good spot.
On July 9, Bon Iver and Jenny Lewis will be kicking off the series. Bon Iver is one of the most buzzed-about artists from 2008. With his flawless record “For Emma, Forever Ago” listeners became enchanted with Bon Iver’s gentle voice and stunning songwriting.
As for Ms. Indie Queen herself, Jenny Lewis will be the following act. The Rilo Kiley superstar is still supporting her second solo record, “Acid Tongue.” Lewis’ voice, which has grown in range over the years, has solidified her reputation as a respected singer and songwriter. This evening has the potential to be pretty incredible. Get there early.

On July 16, it’s The Black Keys and Human Highway taking the Gallivan Center stage. Then, on July 23, catch guitar-enthusiast M. Ward and Land of Talk. Even without the company of Zooey, M. Ward shines as a solo artist.
Indie legends Sonic Youth will be gracing SLC on July 30. The alt-rock heroes are back in town, supporting thir recent release, “The Eternal.” Come hear the group that set a new precendence in music—these guys practically invented an entirely new sound. You can also tune into newcomer Awesome Color.

Just saw Sonic Youth last weekend in St. Louis: outside, under the Arch, with the mighty Mississippi flowing black and glittering in the background, and free, no less. They ROCKED! It was a great night and a great show.
